Iron-related luminescence centers in ZnWO4 : Fe

A systematic spectroscopic study of single ZnWO4 :Fe crystals with different iron concentrations has been performed under excitation by ultraviolet light, by synchrotron radiation or under photostimulation by near-infrared light. The luminescence of Fe3+-related centres has been studied. It is shown that iron centres of different types efficiently promote the formation of crystal defects at low te

Conventional and metal-directed synthesis of homodinuclear and heterotrinuclear complexes of homoditopic and heteroditopic ligands incorporating bpy and tpy metal-binding domains

Strategies for the preparation of multinuclear complexes containing homoditopic and heteroditopic ligands based upon 2,2$-bipyridine (bpy) and 2,2:6$,2$$-terpyridine metal binding domains are presented. Both conventional approaches based upon preparation of a free ligand and subsequent coordination and metal-directed reactions of coordinated ligands are utilized in the various strategies. A repres

Standardization of p-creatinine assays and use of lean body mass allow improved prediction of calculated glomerular filtration rate in adults: A new equation

Objective. To evaluate the Cockcroft - Gault (CG) equation, using various body weight expressions, and the Sawyer equation in predicting glomerular filtration rate (GFR) using an enzymatic and zero-calibrated Jaffe plasma-creatinine assay, and to derive a new robust equation in adults. Material and methods. The CG weight measures included total, ideal and adjusted body weight (ABW; lowest of total

Application of Ultra-fast Timing Techniques to the Study of Exotic and Weakly Produced Nuclei

Ultra-fast time-delayed techniques have been recently applied in a number of studies where exotic nuclei were identified using advanced selection techniques. These include large Compton-suppressed Ge arrays, in-flight separators or recoil separators. Some of the new results are discussed in this presentation. Besides the results for Mg-32 and Pd-96, they include the first determination of the half

Female gender is associated with higher incidence and more stable respiratory symptoms during adolescence

Childhood asthma and wheeze is more common among boys than girls, white the opposite is found in adults. The main objective was to study the incidence and the course of wheeze and asthma during adolescence with focus on gender differences. In addition, we explored associations between lifestyle factors at baseline and wheeze at follow-up. A total of 2399 adolescents answered validated questionnair

Normal labor associated with changes in uterine heparan sulfate proteoglycan expression and localization

Proteoglycans are well-known modulators of intercellular communication and signaling. Remodeling of the proteoglycans in the human uterus occurs throughout pregnancy, and during labor. We therefore hypothesize that heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) play an important role in establishing normal labor. In this study HSPGs were characterized and localized in human uterine tissue. Uterine biopsies

FOXC2 and CAPN10 as candidate genes for obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes

Both disorders depend on genetic and environmental factors. The studies included in this thesis investigated the possible association of the FOXC2 and CAPN10 genes with obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and related phenotypes. FOXC2 encodes a forkhead transcription factor, which was identified as a key regul

Accelerator-based ion beam analysis - an overview and future prospects

The use of energetic ion beams for the analysis of materials has been developed throughout the last four decades and has now evolved into a mature and powerful analytical set of tools applicable in great variety of fields. This paper summarises this development with a special emphasis on the use of nuclear microprobes. The main techniques used for ion beam analysis will be described, suitable appl

Sexual problems in men with prostate cancer in comparison with men with benign prostatic hyperplasia and men from the general population

In a questionnaire study, men with prostate cancer (n = 155) or benign prostatic hyperplasia (n = 131) identified more sexual problems than did men from the general population (n = 129). Sexual dysfunction was acknowledged regarding sexual pleasure and attraction, erectile function and sexual satisfaction and sexual performance. Lowered rates of sexual desire, pleasure and attraction were found wh

Treatment delay and prognosis in invasive bladder cancer.

Purpose: We studied treatment delay, and the impact on disease specific survival and stage progression in a series of patients who had undergone cystectomy. Materials and Methods: All 141 patients underwent radical cystectomy between 1990 and 1997 due to locally advanced bladder cancer. Treatment delay was defined as time from pathological confirmation of invasive disease to performance of cystect

Membrane extraction in environmental chemical analysis

Membrane extraction techniques permit the application of classical liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) chemistry to instrumental and automated operation. Various shortcomings of LLE are overcome by membrane extraction techniques as they use none or very little organic solvents, high enrichment factors can be obtained and there are no problems with emulsions. A three phase SLM system (aq/org/aq), where

Transplantation och donation av vävnader - sex år med nya lagen. Erfarenheter från vävnadsbanken i Lund

Tissue transplantation is more common than organ transplantation. Legislative changes in 1996 transformed tissue banking and conditions for tissue transplantation in Sweden. After an initial decrease in donated tissue, heart valves are now available in sufficient numbers, but there is sometimes a shortage of valves the right size for pediatric cardiac surgery. Since the new transplantation legisla

Neural network prediction of polyproline type II secondary structures

This study considers detection of polyproline type II secondary structures from protein sequences. This difficult problem was handled with multilayer perceptron neural networks, which were found to be useful for such bioinformatics studies. Polyproline II secondary structures have not previously been tried to be predicted from sequences.
