Pervasive applications through scripted assemblies of services

This paper proposes a technique for letting end users build pervasive applications by combining services on networked devices. The approach avoids relying on standardized service interfaces which are deemed too limiting, and instead makes use of migratable user interfaces and scripted combinations of services.

A new model to calculate the drying of concrete

The paper presents the theory for a design toot to calculate drying of concrete, from green condition to flooring. The degree of hydration, the cement ratio of the concrete, the temperature and the moisture state are taken into account. The moisture calculations are based on the use of Kirchhoff potentials. Calculation examples and comparison with experiments are also given in the paper.

Audiovisual network service optimization by quality of experience estimation

With the growing popularity of audio and video communication services on the Internet, network operators, service providers and application developers are becoming increasingly interested in assuring that their services give the best possible experience to the users. Since real-time audio and video services are very sensitive to packet loss, latency and bandwidth variations, the performance of the

The Polish European Paradox

This paper presents views and observations about some current social problems in Poland. The problems introduced are theoretically discussed in reference to Poland’s entry in the European Union. The argumentation in this paper is performed in three stages. The first stage presents a model of Polish society throughout communism towards today’s society, were the weight is put on the Catholic Church’

Conceptions of Crisis Management Capabilities – Municipal Officials’ Perspectives

In the Swedish crisis management system, the municipalities have a great responsibility. One part of this responsibility concerns preparing for crises by making risk and vulnerability analyses as well as plans for how to handle extraordinary events. Such preparedness planning involves municipal officials and consequently their conceptions of their organisations’ crisis management capabilities. Thi

In the wake of a bird - Quantifying aerodynamic performance of avian flight

Popular Abstract in English Insects, birds, bats and pterosaurs have all evolved the ability to fly, even though it requires a lot of energy. The advantage is obvious: one can move about vertically, to go where others cannot, find and access distant food sources or escape your predators. But flying is also a very fast mode of transportation, and when you count the amount of energy required to get Flight is an expensive form of locomotion, but also offers the ability to travel great distances at relatively low cost. Birds have developed various adaptations for optimizing flight performance. The main aim of this thesis is to identify how morphological variables in birds affect aerodynamic drag and flight performance. To this end I studied the aerodynamic performance of a jackdaw (Corvus mone

Predictive modelling of heat and mass transfer in hamburger patties

This study concerns fundamental analysis and predictive modelling of heat and mass transfer in frozen hamburger patties cooked in a double-sided contact fryer. Mathematical and physical models are formulated and further developed to enable improved understanding of the transport processes and reveal the influence of essential parameters. Prediction and analysis of practical situations with heating

Crystallographic Studies of Ternary Chalcogenides and Organic Semiconductors

X-ray diffraction methods have been used to study the crystal structure of different compounds, both organic and inorganic. The inorganic compounds were all synthesized by solid state reactions. A new compound, Re4As6S3, was synthesized and its structure was solved by Rietveld methods. Re4As6S3 is a cluster compound described by a rock-salt-type arrangement of ReAsS3- and As5- clusters. This stru
