Performance modeling and control of web servers

This thesis deals with the task of modeling a web server and designing a mechanism that can prevent the web server from being overloaded. Four papers are presented. The first paper gives an M/G/1/K processor sharing model of a single web server. The model is validated against measurements ands imulations on the commonly usedw eb server Apache. A description is given on how to calculate the necessar

Defect-Aware SOC Test Scheduling

In this paper we address the test scheduling problem for system-on-chip designs. Different from previous approaches where it is assumed that all tests will be performed until completion, we consider the cases where the test process will be terminated as soon as a defect is detected. This is common practice in production test of chips. The proposed technique takes into account the probability of de

Long-term changes in dietary and food intake behaviour in the Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes Study

Aims To compare change in dietary intake, with an emphasis on food groups and food intake behaviour, over time across treatment arms in a diabetes prevention trial and to assess the differences in dietary intake among demographic groups within treatment arms. Methods Data are from the Diabetes Prevention Program and Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes Study. Participants were randomized to a life

A study of the recovery of the dietary fibres from olive mill wastewater and the gelling ability of the soluble fibre fraction

A novel method of the recovery of a dietary fibre containing material from olive mill wastewater (OMW) was developed. Extraction was based on thermal treatment with mixtures of ethanol and acids, prior to the isolation of the alcohol insoluble residue (AIR). Different mixtures were tested and the extracted residues were characterized. The maximum AIR recovery accounted 64.8 g/100 g OMW dry matter,

The energetic cost of vision and the evolution of eyeless Mexican cavefish.

One hypothesis for the reduction of vision in cave animals, such as the eyeless Mexican cavefish, is the high energetic cost of neural tissue and low food availability in subterranean habitats. However, data on relative brain and eye mass in this species or on any measure of the energetic cost of neural tissue are not available, making it difficult to evaluate the "expensive tissue hypothesis." We

Determination of normalized magnetic eigenfields in microwave cavities

The magnetic field integral equation for axially symmetric cavities with perfectly conducting surfaces is discretized according to a high-order convergent Fourier--Nyström scheme. The resulting solver is used to determine eigenwavenumbers and normalized magnetic eigenfields to very high accuracy in the entire computational domain.

Generalized Convexity in Multiple View Geometry

Recent work on geometric vision problems has exploited convexity properties in order to obtain globally optimal solutions. In this paper we give an overview of these developments and show the tight connections between different types of convexity and optimality conditions for a large class of multiview geometry problems. We also show how the convexity properties are closely linked to different typ

Measuring Efficiency in the Swedish Health Care Sector – Levels, Trade-offs and Determinants

This thesis measures cost efficiency in the production of health care and social services in Sweden. The object of analysis is not provider efficiency, but instead the relative efficiency of political organizations or different contractual arrangements. The thesis focuses on: 1) the measurement of cost efficiency, 2) the investigation of potential trade-offs between quantity of health care service

Introducing 'facilitymetrics': A first review and analysis of commonly used measures of scientific leadership among synchrotron radiation facilities worldwide

Big Science accelerator complexes are no longer mere tools for nuclear and particle physics, but modern-day experimental resources for a wide range of natural sciences and often named instrumental to scientific and technological development for innovation and economic growth. Facilities compete on a global market to attract the best users and facilitate the best science, and advertise the achievem

Polyamines increase Ca2+ sensitivity in permeabilized smooth muscle of guinea pig ileum

The effects of polyamines were investigated in strips of smooth muscle from guinea pig ileum permeabilized with beta-escin (0.005%). Spermine (1 mM) inhibited transient contractions induced in Ca(2+)-free medium by carbachol (0.1 mM) and GTP gamma S (0.1 mM) but potentiated responses to caffeine (20 mM) and D-myo-inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (40 microM). At high ethylene glycol-bis(beta-amino-ethy

Electrically active radiation-induced defects in Czochralski-grown Si with low carbon content

Electrically active defects induced by electron irradiation in Czochralski (Cz)grown Si crystals with low carbon content (N-C 10(16) cm(-3). The E-0.11 trap anneals out in the temperature range 100-130 degrees C with the activation energy 1.35 eV. In p-type Cz-Si crystals with low carbon content and boron (NB 2 x 10(14) cm(-3)) one of the dominant radiation-induced defects has been found to be a

Empowerment in people with a mental illness: reliability and validity of the Swedish version of an empowerment scale.

Empowerment has become a widespread concept in various social policy contexts referring to different marginalized groups. Empowerment has also been focused within the mental health field although little empirical research exists. The aim of the present study was to investigate internal consistency and construct validity of the Swedish version of an empowerment scale developed for people with a men

Ion Current Sensing for HCCI Combustion Feedback

Measurement of ion current signal from HCCI combustionwas performed. The aim of the work was to investigateif a measurable ion current signal exists and if it is possible to obtain useful information about the combustion process. Furthermore, influence of mixture quality in termsof air/fuel ratio and EGR on the ion current signal wasstudied. A conventional spark plug was used as ionizationsensor.

Circular Reference Attributed Grammars - their Evaluation and Applications

This paper presents a combination of Reference Attributed Grammars (RAGs) and Circular Attribute Grammars (CAGs). While RAGs allow the direct and easy specification of non-locally dependent information, CAGs allow iterative fixed-point computations to be expressed directly using recursive (circular) equations. We demonstrate how the combined formalism, Circular Reference Attributed Grammars (CRAGs
