Effects of bulk inversion asymmetry and low interface symmetry on the optical properties of broken-gap heterostructures

We have studied the influence of bulk inversion asymmetry (BIA) and the relativistic part of the low-symmetry interface Hamiltonian (IH) on intersubband optical transitions, induced by linearly polarized light, between strongly hybridized electron-hole states in asymmetrical InAs/GaSb broken-gap quantum wells grown along the [001] direction. The self-consistent calculations were performed using th

GRB 030227 : The first multiwavelength afterglow of an INTEGRAL GRB

We present multiwavelength observations of a gamma-ray burst detected byINTEGRAL (GRB 030227) between 5.3 hours and ~ 1.7days after the event. Here we report the discovery of a dim opticalafterglow (OA) that would not have been detected by many previoussearches due to its faintess (R ~ 23). This OA was seen to declinefollowing a power law decay with index alpha R = -0.95 +/-0.16. The spectral inde

Fast, narrow-band computer model for radiation calculations

A fast, narrow-band computer model, FASTNB, which predicts the radiation intensity in a general nonisothermal and nonhomogeneous combustion environment, has been developed. The spectral absorption coefficients of the combustion products, including carbon dioxide, water vapor, and soot, are calculated based on the narrow-band model. FASTNB provides an accurate calculation at reasonably high speed.

Central projections of olfactory receptor neurons from single antennal and palpal sensilla in mosquitoes

In insects, olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) are located in cuticular sensilla, that are present on the antennae and on the maxillary palps. Their axons project into spherical neuropil, the glomeruli, which are characteristic structures in the primary olfactory center throughout the animal kingdom. ORNs in insects often respond specifically to single odor compounds. The projection patterns of the

Search for excited leptons in e(+)e(-) collisions at root s=189-209 GeV

A search for excited lepton production in e(+)e(-) collisions was performed using the data collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 189 GeV to 209 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 600 pb(-1). No evidence for excited lepton production was found. In searches for pair-produced excited leptons, lower mass limits were established in

A 5-year follow-up study on the incidence of retinopathy in type 1 diabetes mellitus in relation to medical risk indicators

OBJECTIVES. The aim of the present study was to describe the 5-year incidence of retinopathy in type 1 diabetes mellitus and to characterize risk indicators for the development and progression of retinopathy. DESIGN. A cross-sectional study of type 1 diabetic patients taken care of at a medical department. SETTING. All type 1 diabetic patients attending the Department of Internal Medicine, Univers

High order singular rank one perturbations of a positive operator

In this paper self-adjoint realizations in Hilbert and Pontryagin spaces of the formal expression L-alpha = L + psi are discussed and compared. Here L is a positive self-adjoint operator in a Hilbert space H with inner product , a is a real parameter, and p in the rank one perturbation is a singular element belonging to H-nH-n+1 with n >= 3, where {H-s}(s=-infinity)(infinity) is the scale of Hilbe

The effect of intermittent injections of CCK-8S and the CCK-A receptor antagonist devazepide on cell proliferation in exocrine rat pancreas

CONCLUSION: Intermittent injections of sulfated cholecystokinin-8 (CCK-8S) or devazepide caused long-lasting effects on cell proliferation in exocrine pancreas in contrast to continuous infusion. The acinar cells responded to both treatments with changes in the labeling index (LI) during the whole study period. When studying the influence of stimulation and inhibition of the CCK-A receptor on cell

Men Webers förståelse av kroppen sitteThis thesis is about the social body in sociology, represented by the classical sociologist Max Weber. Traditional sociology has not taken the body into account. The body has been considered to belong to the realm of the natural sciences. Sociology has seen the body merely as an instrument or a tool for social action. The mind/body dichotomy, homo duplex, prevails in sociology. The purpose of this

On the “vulnerability” of syntactic domains in Swedish and German

This paper investigates the L2 acquisition of clausal syntax in post-puberty learners of German and Swedish regarding V2, VP headedness and verb particle constructions. The learner data are tested against L2 theories according to which lower structural projections (VP) are acquired before higher functional projections (IP, CP), VP syntax is unproblematic (invulnerable), but where grammatical opera

Graft polymerization of acrylic acid onto macroporous polyacrylamide gel (cryogel) initiated by potassium diperiodatocuprate

Potassium diperiodatocuprate-initiated graft polymerization was found to be an efficient and convenient method for grafting of acrylic acid (AAc) onto superporous polyacrylamide gels, so called cryogels (pAAm cryogels). It was possible to achieve grafting degrees as high as 70% with about 25% yield of grafted polymer with respect to the initial amount of monomer. The superporous structure of the c

The concept of proximity has its origins at the beginning of the years ’90 in France with the studies from the Group of the Dynamics of the Proximity. The importance of the territorial proximity for the development is considered basically through studies centred in the analysis of industrial dynamic and innovative environments. Its relationship with the local development in poor rural areas has be

TT virus infections among blood donors in Iceland: prevalence, genotypes, and lack of relationship to serum ALT levels

BACKGROUND: The TT virus (TTV) is a newly identified blood-borne virus. Its association with disease is still unknown, and screening of blood donors has not been implemented. Several genotypes of the TTV have been identified. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Three hundred seventy healthy blood donors were randomly selected and tested for TTV by the PCR method. Sequencing of a part of the genome was perfo
