Beneficial Use of Stormwater - Opportunities for urban renewal and water conservation

This thesis investigates the beneficial use of stormwater in Swedish urban environments. The focus has been on open stormwater systems for source control, as well as rainwater collection systems. To analyse the implementation of open stormwater systems, two case studies are presented: Augustenborg in Malmö and Bäckaslöv wetland in Växjö. The retention and detention effects of green-roofs have been

Reference dosimetry at the neutron capture therapy facility at Studsvik

The purpose of this publication was to present and evaluate the methods for reference dosimetry in the epithermal neutron beam at the neutron capture therapy facility at Studsvik. Measurements were performed in a PMMA phantom and in air using ionization chambers and activation probes in order to calibrate the epithermal neutron beam. Appropriate beam-dependant calibration factors were determined u

The transition to market-based monetary policy: What can China learn from the European experience?

We discuss the prospects for Chinese money market development and transition to market-based monetary policy operations based on a comparative historical analysis of the present Chinese situation and the development in 11 European countries from 1979 up to the launch of the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Central banks in the latter group of countries typically had an incentive to enco

The role of K2O in the selective reduction of NO with NH3 over a V2O5(WO3)/TiO2 commercial selective catalytic reduction catalyst

To elucidate the nature of the acid sites of the V2O5(WO3)/TiO2 catalyst upon K2O addition and its relation to the selective reduction of NO with NH3, measurements were made by means of infrared and Raman spectroscopy, NH3 chemisorption, and NO reduction measurements as a function of the K2O loading. The catalytic activity was found to decrease rapidly with the K2O loading, irrespective of the sim

A Silicon-Tungsten Electromagnetic Calorimeter for LEP

This report describes a silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter used to determine some beam properties and luminosity in the DELPHI experiment at LEP. The polar angular range covered by this detector is 5–8 mrad, which allows the detection of a Bhabha rate about 10 times the rate of produced Z particles at the peak cross section.

C*-crossed products and shift spaces

We use Exel's C*-crossed products associated to non-invertible dynamical systems to associate a C*-algebra to arbitrary shift space. We show that this C*-algebra is canonically isomorphic to the C*-algebra associated to a shift space given by Carlsen [Cuntz–Pimsner C*-algebras associated with subshifts, Internat. J. Math. (2004) 28, to appear, available at arXiv:math.OA/0505503], has the C*-algeb

Lipase-producing microorganisms from a Kenyan alkaline soda lake

Lipolytic enzyme production of 150 isolated strains from samples of Lake Bogoria (Kenya) was examined. Among these, fifteen isolates were selected on the basis of their lipolytic activities and subjected to morphological and 16S rRNA gene sequencing analyses for their identification. All the microorganisms have been selected under culture conditions with pH ranges between 7-10 and temperatures of

Measurement of the energy dependence of hadronic jet rates and the strong coupling alpha(s) from the four-jet rate with the DELPHI detector at LEP

Hadronic events from the data collected with the DELPHI detector at LEP within the energy range from 89 GeV to 209 GeV are selected, their jet rates are determined and compared to predictions of four different event generators. One of them is the recently developed APACIC++ generator which performs a massive matrix element calculation matched to a parton shower followed by string fragmentation. Th

Haplotype-based analysis of common variation in the acetyl-CoA carboxyiase alpha gene and breast cancer risk: A case-control study nested within the European prospective investigation into cancer and nutrition

A key fatty acid synthesis enzyme, acetyl-CoA carboxylase alpha(ACC-alpha), has been shown to be highly expressed in human breast cancer and other tumor types and also to specifically interact with the protein coded by one of two major breast cancer susceptibility genes BRCA1. We used a comprehensive haplotype analysis to examine the contribution of the ACC-alpha common genetic variation (allele f

Early urinary changes in Tamm-Horsfall protein and epidermal growth factor in diabetic children

Both glomerular and tubular markers have been used to follow diabetic nephropathy. However, neither albumin nor proximal tubular markers have proven useful in prepubertal diabetes. Hence we studied two markers derived from the distal tubular cells, Tamm-Horsfall protein (THP) and epidermal growth factor (EGF), The urinary excretion of THP and EGF was examined in samples obtained during the first 2

Effects of ligament sectioning on the kinematics of the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis - A radiostereometric study of 10 cadaveric specimens based on presumed trauma mechanisms with suggestions for treatment

Background Syndesmotic injuries of the ankle without fractures can result from external rotation, abduction and dorsiflexion injuries. Kinematic studies of these trauma mechanisms have not been performed. We attempted to describe the kinematics of the tibiofibular joint in cadaveric specimens using radiostereometry after sequential ligament sectioning, and resulting from different trauma mechanism

Nutrient and carbon budgets in forest soils as decision support in sustainable forest management

Knowledge about the nutrient and carbon budgets in forest soils is essential to maintain sustainable production, but also in several environmental issues, such as acidification, eutrophication and climate change. The budgets are strongly influenced by atmospheric deposition as well as forestry. This study demonstrates how budget calculations for nitrogen (N), carbon (C) and base cations (BC) can b
