The Design and Structure Prediction of Protein Oligomers

Popular Abstract in English Proteins are a class of biological macromolecules that perform countless fundamental and diverse functions in living organisms. Chemically speaking, they are polymers built out of monomeric units called amino acids. All biological proteins are constructed out of 20 different amino-acid types. To form protein molecules, amino acids are linked together in a linear chain lThe minimum free energy state of a protein (the native state) is encoded by its amino-acid sequence. Due to the many torsional degrees of freedom (DOF) available to a polypeptide chain, a vast number of conformations is possible. Therefore, to predict the native state of a protein directly from sequence, a computer algorithm must evaluate a large number of possible conformations using accurate sco

Biotechnological treatment of chlorophenol-contaminated water

Widespread presence of toxic and persistent pollutants in the environment, even at low concentrations, causes risks of adverse effects to human health and the ecosystem. Biological methods for treatment of water streams and removal of persistent pollutants are of great interest due to their simplicity, low cost, and mild operational conditions without harmful by-products. The purpose of this resea

Implementation level of shipper and transport provider practices with an impact on the load factor

The purpose of this paper is to examine current practices of load factor utilisation of road transport. An interview study of five shippers and two transport providers were conducted. The research shows that transport providers seem to work efficiently with operational practices to improve the load factor, but the load factor seems not to be highly prioritised when it comes to strategic decisions.

Molecular Imprinting Technology. Design and Recognition Properties of Antibody/Receptor Mimics

Molecular imprinting technology is derived from the concept of creating designed recognition sites in macromolecular matrices by means of template polymerisation. Molecularly imprinted polymers are able to mimic recognition in natural binding events, such as antibody-antigen and receptor-ligand interactions. This thesis addresses some aspects of the preparation of molecularly imprinted polymers an

Better Support for User Participation Using Business Rules Approach?

User participation in requirement analysis (RA) is necessary for IS quality and user acceptance. A prerequisite for meaningful user participation is that the coming users also understand the requirements. This understanding is made difficult by abstract and “technical” modelling languages and notations which require learning and experience. The Business Rules Approach (BRA) builds on a notion of B

Analysis of Some Convolutional Coding Constructions

EttThis thesis focuses on different convolutional coding constructions for digital communication systems, and on methods to analyze these constructions. The work presented in the thesis can be divided into three main areas; error probability bounds for convolutional codes, analysis of multilevel modulation, and investigation of low-density parity-check convolutional codes. New bounds are developed f

Synthesis of glycosylated amino acids. Solid-phase assembly of T-cell immunogenic glycopeptides and fragments from HIV gp120

Synthetic glycopeptides are valuable tools for studies of the biological functions of protein-bound carbohydrates. Today glycopeptides are efficiently prepared by solid-phase synthesis according to the 9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc) protocol, provided that suitable glycosylated amino acids are available. In this thesis commercial or readily accessible carbohydrate 1,2-trans peracetates were us

MAX4, a 3 GeV light source with a flexible injector

The MAX4 ring is intended to be the future user facility at MAXlab. The high-brilliance 3 GeV storage ring, equipped with small gap, short period superconducting undulators, demonstrates a high mean brilliance over a wide photon energy spectrum. The ring itself is defined from the routine operation of the small gap insertion devices, which is reflected in the small aperture of the ring magnets. Th
