Functional co-operation between the subunits in heterodimeric platelet-derived growth factor receptor complexes
To determine the importance of the phosphorylation capacity of receptor kinase as well as the ability to serve as docking sites for SH2-domain-containing signal transduction molecules, we established pig aortic endothelial cell lines stably expressing kinase-active platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) alpha-receptors together with kinase-inactive beta-receptors, and vice versa. After stimulation
Influence of optimised treatment of people with hip fracture on time to operation, length of hospital stay, reoperations and mortality within 1 year.
Hip fractures are a major cause of hospital stay among the elderly, and result in increased disability and mortality. In this study from 1 April 2003 to 31 March 2004, the influence of optimised treatment of hip fracture on time to operation, length of hospital stay, reoperations and mortality within 1 year were investigated. Comparisons were made between the first 210 patients in the period and t
Non-uniform fractional tessellation
We present a variation of fractional tessellation to provide more uniformly distributed tessellation in screen space. Tessellation weights are added at the vertices for added flexibility and we show that the quality is improved at a minor cost.

A Voyage to Vardø – A Scientific Account of an Unscientific Expedition
After the “Venus Transit Conference” that took place at the University of Tromsø from June 2 to June 3, 2012, participants were given the opportunity to either stay in Tromsø until the night of June 5–6, or to participate in a voyage to Finnmark, where the historical sites Vardø, Hammerfest, and the North Cape were to be visited. This voyage culminated in the observation of the 2012 transit of Ven

Development and Application of Single-Ended Picosecond Laser Diagnostics
DärLight detection and ranging (lidar), a method for nonintrusive, single-ended, and range resolved measurements, has been developed and applied for combustion related diagnostics. Employing picosecond laser pulse durations and detectors providing temporal resolution on the order of picoseconds, lidar has been applied successfully for both quantitative temperature- and species concentration measureme

Executive compensation based on asset values
This paper describes how credit default swaps could be employed to create performance based executive compensation portfolios that reflect the value of a firm’s debt as well as equity; i.e. the total value of all a firm’s assets. We define so-called Asset Value Unit (AVU) compensation portfolios that work both for executive- and non-executive pay schemes in financial as well as non-financial firms

Vibrational CARS thermometry in sooty flames: Quantitative evaluation of C2 absorption interference
The application of nitrogen vibrational CARS thermometry to sooty, premixed, atmospheric pressure flames has been investigated using a Nd:YAG laser based system. It was found that laser-produced C2 radicals strongly absorb part of the fundamental band peak in the CARS spectrum. This was the most severe interference to the CARS signal. A quantitative investigation of temperature errors caused by th
Bubble Power and Ultrasound
If anyone begins to think about the term ultrasound, the first thing that comes to the mind is the fact that it is used in animal communications (e.g., bat navigation and dog whistles). Also, one may start to think that this term is familiar in daily life and has been used many times in medicine applications for foetal imaging, (SONAR). However, many questions come to the mind, such as, what is ha

Blood pressure and other metabolic syndrome factors and risk of brain tumour in the large population-based Me-Can cohort study.
OBJECTIVES:: Brain tumour has few established determinants. We assessed to which extent risk of brain tumour was related to metabolic syndrome factors in adults. METHODS:: In the Me-Can project, 580 000 individuals from Sweden, Austria, and Norway were followed for a median of 10 years after baseline measurement. Data on brain tumours were obtained from national cancer registries. The factors of m

Windstorms in Sweden - variations and impacts
Windstorms have caused severe damage on several occasions in Sweden during the last century. A general concern about future projections of climate extremes has raised questions on the variations and impacts of windstorms. The main objective with this work was to reach a deeper understanding of the variability and possible trends in windstorms, and related storm impacts in forests. This was achiev
