Isospin symmetry in B(E2) values: Coulomb excitation study of 21Mg

The Tz=−32 nucleus 21Mg has been studied by Coulomb excitation on 196Pt and 110Pd targets. A 205.6(1)-keV γ-ray transition resulting from the Coulomb excitation of the 52+ ground state to the first excited 12+ state in 21Mg was observed for the first time. Coulomb excitation cross-section measurements with both targets and a measurement of the half-life of the 12+ state yield an adopted value of B

Healthy Nordic Diet Modulates the Expression of Genes Related to Mitochondrial Function and Immune Response in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells from Subjects with Metabolic Syndrome–A SYSDIET Sub-Study

Scope: To explore the effect of a healthy Nordic diet on the global transcriptome profile in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of subjects with metabolic syndrome. Methods and results: Subjects with metabolic syndrome undergo a 18/24 week randomized intervention study comparing an isocaloric healthy Nordic diet with an average habitual Nordic diet served as control (SYSDIET study). Altoge

Some aspects on the pathophysiology of migraine and a review of device therapies for migraine and cluster headache

Migraine is a common, severe disease, affecting the brain and blood vessels, causing much pain, time missed from work and family, and severe disability. It affects approximately 12% of most Western populations studied and affects women three times more than men. Cluster headache is a much less common dysfunction of the hypothalamus, involving the sphenopalatine ganglion and other areas; it causes

Search for Higgs boson pair production in the bb¯ WW * decay mode at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for Higgs boson pair production in the bb¯ WW * decay mode is performed in the bb¯ ℓνqq final state using 36.1 fb −1 of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No evidence of events beyond the background expectation is found. Upper limits on the non-resonant pp → HH production cross section of 10 pb a

Direct numerical simulation of turbulent premixed flames at high Karlovitz numbers: structure and modelling

There has been recent increased interest in premixed flames and in particular for use in gas turbines for power generation. This is a development that follows from increasing demands for high efficiency and low emissions of NOx, which can be achieved by using premixed flames and lean pre-heated mixtures, often close to the lean flammability limit. In combination with high levels of turbulence, whi

The carbon balance of a managed boreal landscape measured from a tall tower in northern Sweden

Boreal forests exchange large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) with the atmosphere. A managed boreal landscape usually comprises various potential CO2 sinks and sources across forest stands of varying age classes, clear-cut areas, mires, and lakes. Due to this heterogeneity and complexity, large uncertainties exist regarding the net CO2 balance at the landscape scale. In this study, we present the

Biohythane Production From Food Wastes

Biohythane is the gaseous product from the organic matter degradation in two-stage anaerobic digestion (AD) process. It is composed of a mixture of hydrogen and methane, where the hydrogen concentration can be in the range from 10% to 30% v/v. This chapter illustrates the advantages of biohythane use compared to the use of hydrogen and methane, as separate biofuels. The two-stage AD process and th

Adding the s-Process Element Cerium to the APOGEE Survey : Identification and Characterization of Ce II Lines in the H-band Spectral Window

Nine Ce ii lines have been identified and characterized within the spectral window observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey (between λ1.51 and 1.69 μm). At solar metallicities, cerium is an element that is produced predominantly as a result of the slow capture of neutrons (the s-process) during asymptotic giant branch stellar evolution. The Ce ii lines

EU Competences and the Damages Directive: The Continuum Between Minimum and Full Harmonisation

This chapter examines the Damages Directive and the issue of competence allocation between the Union and the Member States, by analysing the degree of comprehensiveness and detail of the Directive as well as future perspectives of full harmonisation on EU level. It is argued that the distinction between minimumand full harmonisation is not particularly helpful. Instead, we suggest an alternative u

Är det detta som kallas postmodernism? : En studie i Katarina Frostensons och Stig Larssons diktning

During the 1980s the word ’postmodernism’ was inserted into the dicourse of Swedish literature in a curious way. Even though both writers and critics found the word bewildering – or deemed it a buzzword devoid of meaning – it sparked fierce debates. Despite this, and despite the fact that few wanted to be associated with the word, it has become common to describe the 1980s as the era of Swedish li

The use of anthropometric measures in the prediction of incident gout : results from a Swedish community-based cohort study

Objectives: To study associations between different anthropometric measures and incident gout, and to find the best predictive measure. Method: We used the baseline investigation from the Malmö Diet and Cancer study, excluding cases of prevalent gout (n = 28 081). Cox regression for each anthropometric measurement was calculated per standard deviation increment for men and women, with hazard ratio

Mapping the diversity of microbial lignin catabolism : experiences from the eLignin database

Lignin is a heterogeneous aromatic biopolymer and a major constituent of lignocellulosic biomass, such as wood and agricultural residues. Despite the high amount of aromatic carbon present, the severe recalcitrance of the lignin macromolecule makes it difficult to convert into value-added products. In nature, lignin and lignin-derived aromatic compounds are catabolized by a consortia of microbes s

Knowledge spillover from Master of Science Theses in Engineering Education in Sweden

Educational collaboration activities are generally under-researched part of the interactive learning between universities and industry. The study based on 529 Master of Science (MSc) theses from a major Swedish engineering school, the faculty of engineering LTH at Lund University, shows that MSc theses are a frequently used collaboration mechanism between university and industry in engineering edu
