InAs quantum dots grown on InAlGaAs lattice matched to InP

In this paper, we present InAs quantum dots prepared on an InxAlyGa1-x-yAs surface by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy. Atomic force microscopy measurements indicate that dots grown on material with higher Al content are smaller, and that the local dot densities on step-bunched facets formed on the vicinal (0 0 1) surfaces increase. We find that these dots show luminescence at very long wavelengt

Time-domain Fresnel-to-Fraunhofer diffraction with photon echoes

A photon echo experiment in Tm3+:YAG is reported that shows, for the first time to the authors’ knowledge, the time-domain equivalent of the transition from near- to far-field diffraction, including Talbot self-imaging effects. The experiment demonstrates the huge dispersion capability of photon echoes and opens the way to further exploration of space–time duality.

Visual analog scales for interpretation of back and leg pain intensity in patients operated for degenerative lumbar spine disorders

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective observational study of visual analog scale (VAS) scores for pain in patients operated at one institution within the framework of a national registry. OBJECTIVE: To describe the use of recording VAS for pain intensity in patients operated on for lumbar spine problems. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There is no consensus regarding pain outcomes assessment in spine patients.

A structural insight into the inhibition of human and Leishmania donovani ornithine decarboxylases by 1-amino-oxy-3-aminopropane

The critical role of polyamines in key processes such as cell growth, differentiation and macromolecular synthesis makes the enzymes involved in their synthesis potential targets in the treatment of certain types of cancer and parasitic diseases. Here we present a study on the inhibition of human and Leishmania donovani ODC (ornithine decarboxylase), the first committed enzyme in the polyamine bio

A Feasibility Study of Automated Support for Similarity Analysis of Natural Language Requirements in Market-Driven Development

In market-driven software development there is a strong need for support to handle congestion in the requirements engineering process, which may occur as the demand for short time-to-market is combined with a rapid arrival of new requirements from many different sources. Automated analysis of the continuous flow of incoming requirements provides an opportunity to increase the efficiency of the requi

Genetic diversity of the moss Plagiomnium affine in forests of contrasting age.

We screened six populations of the clonal forest floor moss Plagiomnium affine from forests of different ages for genetic variation at 23 allozyme loci. Samples consisting of two adjacent, unconnected shoots were taken at regular intervals along one transect from each population. Transect lengths varied from 22 to 52 m, depending on the size of the local populations. From a sample of 602 shoots, w

Transient waves in nonstationary media

This paper treats propagation of transient waves in nonstationary media, which has many applications in, for example, electromagnetics and acoustics. The underlying hyperbolic equation is a general, homogeneous, linear, first-order 2×2 system of equations. The coefficients in this system depend on one spatial coordinate and time. Furthermore, memory effects are modeled by integral kernels, which,

Arthritis suppression by NADPH activation operates through an interferon-beta pathway

Background: A polymorphism in the activating component of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase complex, neutrophil cytosolic factor 1 (NCFI), has previously been identified as a regulator of arthritis severity in mice and rats. This discovery resulted in a search for NADPH oxidase- activating substances as a potential new approach to treat autoimmune disorders such as rh

Exercise and Functional Performance in Middle-aged Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis

Mina studier visar att det finns ett samband mellan muskelfunktion i benen och riskenThe overall purpose of this thesis was to explore the impact of exercise and functional performance on development and treatment of knee osteoarthritis in the middle aged. In this thesis, I have studied a population based cohort of middle-aged subjects (35-54 years, 42 % women) with chronic knee pain at baseline, to evaluate the longitudinal effect of muscle weakness on knee osteoarthritis develo

CALLUM Linear Transmitter - Architecture and Circuit Analysis

Linear architectures such as CALLUM are very attractive for power-efficient operations, since they have no fundamental limitations prohibiting a 100% efficiency for all envelope levels, without sacrificing the potential of a linear transmission. On the influence of the prior distribution in image reconstruction

Two measures of the influence of the prior distribution p(B) in Bayes estimation are proposed. Both involve comparing with alternative prior distributions proportional to p(theta)(s), for s >= 0. The first one, the influence curve for the prior distribution, is simply the curve of parameter values which are obtained as estimates when the estimation is made using p(B)s instead of p(B). It measures

Synthesis and Characterization of Anionic Graft Copolymers Containing Poly(ethylene oxide) Grafts

Anionic graft copolymers were synthesized through grafting of poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (MPEG) onto terpolymers containing succicinic anhydride groups. The backbone polymers were prepared through radical terpolymerization of maleic anhydride, styrene, and one of the following monomers: methyl methacrylate, ethylhexyl methacrylate, and diethyl fumarate. MPEG of different molecular weig
