Do single right hemisphere infarcts or transient ischaemic attacks result in aprosody?

The ability to perceive and express prosodic qualities of speech was tested in 21 patients with a single focal ischaemic disturbance of the right hemisphere, 14 patients having an infarct and 7 transient ischaemic attacks, and in 21 age-matched normal controls. All patients were predominantly right-handed. None showed signs of aphasia. Pure tone audiometry showed acceptable hearing for speech. The

Patients with Goodpasture's disease have two normal COL4A3 alleles encoding the NC1 domain of the type IV collagen {alpha}3 chain.

Background. Goodpasture's disease (GP) is a rare but severe disease characterized by anti-glomerular basement membrane antibodies, rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis and lung haemorrhage. The autoantibodies are restricted to a narrow epitope region on the NC1 domain of the alpha3 chain of type IV collagen. GP is strongly associated with major histocompatibility complex (MHC) allele HLA DRB1-15

Milk membrane lipid vesicle structures studied with Cryo-TEM.

Milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) lipids have been studied in the presence and absence of proteins -lactoglobulin and -casein. The aim of this study was to relate the self-assembly structure, e.g. vesicles, formed in aqueous dispersions of MFGM lipids to the lipid composition, electrolyte composition as well as the effect of added milk proteins, i.e. -lactoglobulin and -casein. For this purpose, ve

Long-term neuroblast migration along blood vessels in an area with transient angiogenesis and increased vascularization after stroke

Background and Purpose - Stroke induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) causes long-term formation of new striatal neurons from stem/progenitor cells in the subventricular zone (SVZ). We explored whether MCAO leads to hypoxia, changes in vessel density, and angiogenesis in the ipsilateral SVZ and adjacent striatum, and determined the relation between the migrating neuroblasts and the va

Moisture properties of self-levelling flooring compounds

Self-levelling flooring compounds (SLC) are used to level substrates (mainly concrete slabs) before applying final floor coverings. Although it is an extensively used product, only limited research has so far been published concerning their moisture properties. This report focuses on moisture properties of SLC and describes methods for determining them. Moisture properties of materials are importa

Effect of headgroup on DNA - Cationic surfactant interactions

The interaction behavior of DNA with different types of hydroxylated cationic surfactants has been studied. Attention was directed to how the introduction of hydroxyl substituents at the headgroup of the cationic surfactants affects the compaction of DNA. The DNA-cationic surfactant interaction was investigated at different charge ratios by several methods like UV melting, ethidium bromide exclusi

Kvinnobilder - helgonnamn

The basis of this paper is a comparative study, on the one hand of the frequency of saints' names among the women in medieval Denmark, and on the other of the occurrence of pictures of female saints in the same region. As to certain names, e g Catherine, Barbara and Anne, there is a correspondence of frequency and time, which suggests a deliberate popularization of the saints in question. Othr cas

Flinta i sydvästra Skåne : en diakron studie av råmaterial, produktion och funktion med fokus på boplatsteknologi och metalltida flintor.

The most important issue in this dissertation will be a discussion concerning metal age flint use in Scania. Since flint tools from the Bronze and Iron Ages and Medieval times have rarely been examined, there are few general guidelines in typology or morphology. It is quite clear that conversions of existing Stone Age typological schemes are unsuitable when one intends to study the often simple an

Broad-band photometric colors and effective temperature calibrations for late-type giants - II. Z <0.02

We investigate the effects of metallicity on the broad-band photometric colors of late-type giants, and make a comparison of synthetic colors with observed photometric properties of late-type giants over a wide range of effective temperatures (T-eff = 3500- 4800K) and gravities (log g = 0.0-2.5), at [M/H] = -1.0 and -2.0. The influence of metallicity on the synthetic photometric colors is small at

Physical limitations of antennas in a lossy medium

The dissipated power and the directivity of antennas in a homogeneous, lossy medium are systematically analyzed in this paper. The antennas are ideal and located inside a lossless sphere. In the lossy space outside the sphere, the electromagnetic fields are expanded in a complete set of vector wave functions. The radiation efficiency, the directivity, and the power gain are defined for antennas in

Increased autoantibodies to SOX13 in Swedish patients with type 1 diabetes.

This article aims to estimate the prevalence of SOX13 antibodies in Swedish patients with type 1 diabetes and healthy controls. The patients (n = 102; median age 35 years [range, 9-89]) were newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in a defined area in southern Sweden during 1995-1998. Islet cell antibodies (ICA) were analyzed with immunofluorescence, while glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies (GADA

Meat, fish, and colorectal cancer risk: The European prospective investigation into cancer and nutrition

Background. Current evidence suggests that high red meat intake is associated with increased colorectal cancer risk. High fish intake may be associated with a decreased risk, but the existing evidence is less convincing. Methods: We prospectively followed 478040 men and women from 10 European countries who were free of cancer at enrollment between 1992 and 1998. Information on diet and lifestyle w

SIMIND based pinhole imaging: Development and validation

Monte Carlo programs, like the SIMIND program, have become increasingly used to simulate imaging systems like the scintillation camera and SPECT systems. Up to now, it has not been able to simulate a pinhole-imaging device with SIMIND. The aim of this work was to develop a routine for pinhole-imaging consisting of a knife-edge collimator and a conical shielding. The routine tracks the path of each
