The Low-Mass IMF - Deep Star Counts in the DSph Galaxy Ursa Minor

We present a new study of deep star counts in the Local Group dwarf spheroidal (dSph) in Ursa Minor. Both the luminosity function (LF) and the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the unevolved stars are compared with the LF and CMD of the old, metal-poor globular cluster M92. The main sequence locations and turn-offs are identical within the errors. Since we. know from the brighter evolved stars that

Engineering Work - On Peer Reviewing as a Method of Horizontal Control

The existing research has produced a useful palette of ideas that help us make sense of the phenomenon of organizational control. But there is a trend that hampers the interpretative possibilities: a heavy bias towards vertical forms of control. It is frequently assumed that the control that operates in organizations has its origin in the actions of managers. This assumption is especially problema

In this chapter we explore the meaning of 'care' and 'treatment' in a specific context -- contemporary prisons in Sweden -- as they are displayed and used in interview talk with inmates and staff members. Drawing on unstructured interviews from two sociological projects we develop an ethnomethodological analysis to uncover how 'care' and 'treatment' are used as identificatory as well as moral reso

Strain-assisted corrosion cracking and growth rate inhibitors

A model for evolution of cracks as a result of strain-assisted corrosion is presented. The considered cracks possess a realistic geometry, where the tip region is an integral part of the crack surface instead of being a singular point. This geometry is either implicitly defined or is a consequence of crack nucleation from surface irregularities. The evolution model poses a moving boundary value pr

Everyday Forms of Resistance to the Law: An Ethnographic Study of Street Vendors in Bogotá

Selling goods or providing services in public spaces is one of the most accessible occupations for many individuals living in poverty in today’s world. However, most street vendors conduct their businesses by disobeying laws that prohibit this kind of work. Drawing on field data on street vendors in the city of Bogotá, Colombia, this article ethnographically explores vendors’ ideas, perceptions, a

Adsorption of dicarboxylates on nano-sized gibbsite particles: effects of ligand structure on bonding mechanisms

The adsorption of the dicarboxylates o-phthalate, maleate, fumarate, malonate, and oxalate (representing ligands with the general composition -O2C-C-n-CO2; n = 0, 1, or 2) on gibbsite were studied by means of quantitative batch adsorption experiments and attenuated total reflectance Fourier. transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. The interpretations of ATR-FTIR spectra were aided by compariso

Central bank power: a matter of coordination rather than money supply

Popular Abstract in Swedish Avhandlingen kretsar kring centralbankens möjligheter att kontrollera inflationstakten. Under senare tid har mycket forskning ägnats åt att analysera och utvärdera de institutionella förutsättningarna för centralbanker, såväl avseende graden av oberoende som vilka mål penningpolitiken bör inriktas mot; exempelvis direkta inflationsmål versus användandet av indirekta målAfter an introductory chapter, the hypothesis is made in chapter two: that central bank power to control the rate of inflation rests on the bank’s ability to achieve a role as a focal point for inflation. Inflation is a measure of changes in the general price level, the price level is an index of individual prices, and to predict future price levels is thus to predict future prices on individual i

Surface oxides on close-packed surfaces of late transition metals

In recent years, the formation of thin, well-ordered but complex surface oxides on late transition metals has been discovered. The driving force for this line of research has been the strong incentive to increase the partial pressure of oxygen from ultra-high vacuum to conditions more relevant for heterogeneous catalysis. Here we review the present status of the research field. Compared to oxygen
