Systemic necrotizing vasculitides in severe alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency

We describe the clinical presentation and outcome in a series of eight patients with systemic necrotizing vasculitis and severe alpha1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency followed up at three Swedish hospitals during 1968-92. We also review six other cases reported in the literature during the same period. Diagnosis of severe AAT deficiency was based on the presence of the PiZZ phenotype, or low plasma t

Pension design and gender : Analyses of developed and developing countries

All societies have to face the problem no one can financially support her- or himself during all periods of life. Low earnings capacity may be caused by, for example, sickness, disability, unemployment, child rearing, widowhood and old age. Thus, all societies have to organize support for those without earnings capacity. Three broad ways can be distinguished: the family, the market and the state.

A comparative study of sex pheromone biosynthesis in two strains of the turnip moth, Agrotis segetum, producing different ratios of sex pheromone components

Among the sex pheromone components of the turnip moth, Agrotis segetum, (Z)-5-decenyl acetate, (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate and (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate are biosynthetically derived from palmitic acid by Δ11-desaturation, chain- shortening, reduction and acetylation. Females of a Zimbabwean population produce the three components in a 78:20:2 ratio, while Swedish females produce the three components

Genetic variation in the strongly canalized sex pheromone communication system of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis hubner (Lepidoptera; Pyralidae)

The major difference in pheromone production between the so-called E and Z strains of the European corn borer Ostrinia nubilalis is controlled by two alleles at a single autosomal locus. E-strain females produce an (E)-11- tetradecenyl acetate pheromone with 1-3% of the Z isomer, whereas Z-strain females produce the opposite blend. In laboratory-reared insects we found that F1 females produced, on

Pheromone differences between sibling taxa Diachrysia chrysitis (linnaeus, 1758) and D. tutti (Kostrowicki, 1961) (Lepidoptera Noctuidae)

The noctuid sibling taxa Diachrysia chrysitis s. str. and D. tutti, of yet uncertain taxonomic status, have previously been shown to possess differences in morphology and to be attracted to different mixtures of the two presumed pheromone components (Z)-5-decenyl acetate and (Z)-7-decenyl acetate. Typical D. tutti males (clearly broken forewing marking) are known to respond to a 2: 100 mixture of

Moth pheromone genetics and evolution

Argues that there is no reason to dismiss species recognition as a possible cause of evolutionary change in moth sex pheromones. Selection for species recognition cannot explain all of the diversity in sex pheromones and the data supporting this contention are weak, but the alternative causes suggested, invoking mate choice between conspecifics as the mechanism of sexual selection, has no empirica

Sex pheromone biosynthesis in the Asian corn borer Ostrinia furnacalis (II) : Biosynthesis of (E)‐ and (Z)‐12‐tetradecenyl acetate involves Δ14 desaturation

Sex pheromone biosynthesis in the Asian corn borer Ostrinia furnacalis was studied by topical application of deuterium labelled fatty acids to the pheromone gland. The incorporation of the labelled acids into pheromone components and precursors was determined by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection and mass spectrometry in the selected ion monitoring mode. The labelling experiments s

Is there an ‘iron law’ of Big Science?

Big Science is costly and complex, and historical evidence seems to suggest that projects often get delayed and more expensive than planned. On the basis of several studies of large infrastructures such as railroads and bridges, the Danish geographer Bent Flyvbjerg has proposed that there is an “iron law” of megaprojects, meaning that they almost without exception turn out more expensive and more

Nya riktlinjer för kronisk pankreatit

Patients with chronic pancreatitis have an impaired quality of life and are at risk for several long-term complications. It is important to diagnose and treat these patients to minimize the effects of the disease. Clinical manifestations of chronic pancreatitis include a wide range of symptoms and patients are managed differenth between medical centers. In recent years, there have been improvement

The concept of human security : Does it add anything of value to international legal theory or practice?

This chapter explains the concept of human security at the international policy level, and reflects upon its narrower and broader meanings. It considers the potential ‘added value’ of the human security concept. Prolonged armed conflict jeopardizes the basic elements needed for human survival, including fundamental rights and freedoms. In order to bring an appreciable ‘added value’ to internationa

Svaren kom från 27 olika orter i SveWithin the Nordic-Baltic SPEDUCULT project, a survey was sent to people and work places engaged in multisensory environments (also called MSEs or sensory rooms) in Sweden. Most of the respondents worked with individuals with intellectual disabilities, at centra for sensory stimulation, workplaces for daily activities, habilitation centra or schools. The answers to the survey came from 27 places in

Ice-nucleating ability of particulate emissions from solid-biomass-fired cookstoves : An experimental study

This research was part of the Salutary Umeå Study of Aerosols in Biomass Cookstove Emissions (SUSTAINE) laboratory experiment campaign. We studied ice-nucleating abilities of particulate emissions from solid-fuel-burning cookstoves, using a portable ice nuclei counter, Spectrometer Ice Nuclei (SPIN). These emissions were generated from two traditional cookstove types commonly used for household co

A load frame for in situ tomography at PETRA III

A load frame for in situ mechanical testing is developed for the microtomography end stations at the imaging beamline P05 and the high-energy material science beamline P07 of PETRA III at DESY, both operated by the Helmholtz- Zentrum Geesthacht. The load frame is fully integrated into the beamline control system and can be controlled via a feedback loop. All relevant parameters (load, displacement

Institutions and venture capital

We survey the literature on venture capital and institutions and present a case study comparing the development of the venture capital market in the United States and Sweden. Our literature survey underscores that the legal environment, financial market development, the tax system, labor market regulations, and public spending on research and development correlate with venture capital activities a

In-hospital cardiac arrest and preceding National Early Warning Score (NEWS) : A retrospective case-control study

We aimed to describe and evaluate the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) in the 24 hours preceding an in-hospital cardiac arrest among general somatic ward patients. The 24 hours preceding the in-hospital cardiac arrest were divided into four timespans and analysed by a medical record review of 127:254 matched case-control patients. The median NEWS ranged from 3 (2-6) to 6 (3-9) points for cases v
