Soluble CD163 and TWEAK in early pregnancy gestational diabetes and later glucose intolerance

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is today universally diagnosed during late pregnancy. Treating hyperglycaemia during pregnancy reduces the risk of complications, the effect of interventions is however limited due to the late diagnosis. It is thus important to identify biomarkers reaching a high precision for GDM development in early pregnancy. Here we aim to investigate soluble CD163 (sCD163)

Linking concepts of change and ecosystem services research: A systematic review

Transformation, transition and regime shift are increasingly applied concepts in the academic literature to describe changes in society and the environment. Ecosystem services represent one framework that includes the implicit aim of supporting transformation towards a more sustainable system. Nevertheless, knowledge and systematic reviews on the use of these concepts within ecosystem services res

Governance and stakeholder perspectives of managed re-alignment: adapting to sea level rise in the Inner Forth estuary, Scotland

With climate change, coastal areas are faced with unprecedented sea level rise and flooding, raising questions as to how societies will choose to adapt. One option is to strengthen existing sea walls to maintain current land uses; however, scientists, policy-makers and conservationists increasingly see the benefits of managed realignment, which is a nature-based coastal adaptation that involves th

An automatic method for measurements of arterial intima-media thickness using ultrasonic B-mode data

We have previously developed algorithms that use B-mode cineloops for simultaneous measurements of arterial diameter change and longitudinal movement of the arterial wall. In this study the lumen diameter algorithm was extended to also measure arterial intima-media thickness of the far wall. To optimize the algorithm the influence of the lateral width of the region-of-interest (1 pixel, 0.1 mm, 0.

Community engagement : The ‘last mile’ challenge for European research e-infrastructures

Europe is building its Open Science Cloud; a set of robust and interoperable e-infrastructures with the capacity to provide data and computational solutions through cloud-based services. The development and sustainable operation of such e-infrastructures are at the forefront of European funding priorities. The research community, however, is still reluctant to engage at the scale required to signa

Imaging features of CNS involvement in AIDS

Patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) are the subjects of a large part of routine neuroradiological work in the Western world currently. The World Health Organization announced that Turkish authorities had reported a cumulative total of 2544 HIV cases from 1985 to 2006, of whom 623 had developed AIDS and 140 had died. It is estimated that approximately one-third of AIDS patients

No title

In patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), the most common cause of focal intracranial lesion is Toxoplasma gondii infection. T. gondii encephalitis is an easily and effectively treatable disease, with promising outcomes. T. gondii has the potential to form a focal infection niche anywhere in the central nervous system, thus allowin

Invasive group A streptococcal infection with pancarditis caused by a new emm-type 12 allele of Streptococcus pyogenes

Throughout the 1980s, a progressive increase in the incidence of Streptococcus pyogenes-related invasive infections has occurred. It has been suggested that a host-related immunogenetic background, as well as bacterial virulence factors may play an important role in the outcome of streptococcal infections. Here, we present the first case of pancarditis in the literature caused by direct bacterial

Affinity precipitation

Precipitation and recovery of precipitates is one of the unit operations in chemical engineering that can be operated on a large scale. Experiences from the area of biotechnology have clearly shown that there is not enough selectivity in the precipitation methods used to be able to separate, for example, complex mixtures of proteins from cell homogenates. Moreover, methods to precipitate proteins

Optical spectroscopy of thulium-doped oxyfluoroborate glass

Optical spectroscopy of Tm3+-doped 59H3BO 3-20ZnO-20LiF-1Tm2O3 glass is presented. From the measured absorption spectra, radiative parameters were determined using the Judd-Ofelt (JO) theory. Excitation in the range of 750-800 nm resulted in a frequency up-converted emission at 453 nm (1D2 → 3F4). Excitation spectra and intensity dependence of the up-converted fluorescence have been investigated a

Photoluminescence of terbium ions in near-stoichiometric lithium niobate

We investigated the photoluminescence properties of near-stoichiometric LiNbO3 crystals doped with Tb only and double doped with Tb and Fe. Excitation spectra for the emission from the 5D4 state in both crystals have been studied in the range 200-500 nm. We observed two broad ultraviolet absorption bands and discussed their relations to Tb ions. Temperature dependence of the 5D4 emission intensity

Geoelectrical Imaging for Pre-investigation for Urban Underground Infrastructure

The project is part of the Geoinfra TRUST framework that is working towards developing techniques for more cost efficient and sustainable underground construction in urban areas (see http://trust-geoinfra.se/ for more information). This project aims at development and adaptation of DCIP (DC resistivity and induced polarisation) imaging for use in urban environments, and includes demonstration and
