Integrating supply chains for emergencies and ongoing operations in UNHCR

Humanitarian organizations (HOs) often base their warehouse locations on individuals' experience and knowledge rather than on decision-support tools. Many HOs run separate supply chains for emergency response and ongoing operations. Based on reviews of humanitarian network design literature combined with an in-depth case study of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), this paper pr

Investigation on thermal performance of a high-temperature heat-pipe thermal protection structure

Sharp leading edges with a millimeter-scale radius are required for hypersonic vehicles from aerodynamic reasons. However, with the leading edges being so sharp, stagnation regions at wing and tail leading edges suffer a hostile thermal environment. Therefore, a high-temperature heat pipe is considered to be integrated into the structure of the leading edge to reduce the temperature of the stagnat

Changes of storm properties in the United States : Observations and multimodel ensemble projections

Changes in climate are likely to induce changes in precipitation characteristics including intensity, frequency, duration and patterns of events. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of multiple regional climate models (RCMs) in the North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program (NARCCAP) to simulate storm properties including storm duration, inter-storm period, storm intensity, a

Demographic and Seizure Variables, But Not Hypnotizability or Dissociation, Differentiated Psychogenic from Organic Seizures

Early detection and differential diagnosis of psychogenicnon-epileptic seizures (PNES) and epileptic seizures (ES) is a majorclinical issue in comprehensive epilepsy centers. Using blind conditionswith patients with PNES (N = 10) and ES (N = 31) before diagnosis,we tested the hypotheses that individuals with PNES would exhibitsignificantly greater dissociativity, hypnotizability, absorption, and h

Towards high efficiency nanowire solar cells

Semiconductor nanowires are a class of materials recently gaining increasing interest for solar cell applications. In this article we review the development of the field with a special focus on the III-V materials due to their potential to reach high power conversion efficiencies. After introducing basic concepts of nanowire synthesis, we discuss important aspects of nanowire design for high power

PON-Sol : Prediction of effects of amino acid substitutions on protein solubility

Motivation: Solubility is one of the fundamental protein properties. It is of great interest because of its relevance to protein expression. Reduced solubility and protein aggregation are also associated with many diseases. Results: We collected from literature the largest experimentally verified solubility affecting amino acid substitution (AAS) dataset and used it to train a predictor called PON

Subintimal Recanalization of an Occluded Common Iliac Stent : A Case Report

The purpose of this report is to describe a minimally invasive alternative endovascular technique for the treatment of chronically occluded stents when it is not possible to cross them endoluminally. A 71-year-old patient with recurrent severe lower limb claudication due to occlusion of a stent placed in the common iliac artery 5 years earlier underwent subintimal recanalization of the stented seg

Effective dose in low-dose CT compared with radiography for templating of total hip arthroplasty

Background Recently, total hip arthroplasty (THA) has come to focus on restoration of individual anatomy including femoral neck anteversion and global offset (femoral and acetabular offset). Three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) data could provide a better basis for preoperative templating. The use of CT has been hampered by high radiation dose. Purpose To evaluate the effective dose us

The art of gamification; teaching sustainability and system thinking by pervasive game development

In 2013 Hedmark University College conducted a research project where students from a game development project/study program developed and tested a Pervasive Game for learning as part of a class in System Thinking. The overall game goal was to teach Sustainability through System Thinking, and to give the students a real world experience with their game;. It was tested on 5th and 7th graders in ele

Multiple imputation in veterinary epidemiological studies : A case study and simulation

The problem of missing data occurs frequently in veterinary epidemiological studies. Most studies use a complete case (CC) analysis which excludes all observations for which any relevant variable have missing values. Alternative approaches (most notably multiple imputation (MI)) which avoid the exclusion of observations with missing values are now widely available but have been used very little in

Aerosol indirect effects on glaciated clouds. Part 2 : Sensitivity tests using solute aerosols

Sensitivity tests were performed on a midlatitude continental case using a state-of-the-art aerosol–cloud model to determine the salient mechanisms of aerosol indirect effects (AIE) from solute aerosols. The simulations showed that increased solute aerosols doubled cloud-droplet number concentrations and hence reduced cloud particle sizes by about 20% and consequently inhibited warm rain processes
