Här presenteras för första gången på svenska i direkt översättning från arabiska en samling graffiti från slutet av 900-talet. Främlingarnas bok består av 76 berättelser som var och en i anekdotisk form på prosa utgör en ramberättelse för en graffiti på poesi som någon främling skrivit ner på en pelare i en kyrka, på väggen i ett värdshus eller på något föremål som tillfälligt funnits till hands.
