Nitric oxide synthase inhibitors influence dynorphin A (1-17) immunoreactivity in the rat brain following hyperthermia
The possibility that nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitors influence dynorphin immunoreactivity following hyperthermia was examined in a rat model using a pharmacological approach. Previous reports from our laboratory show that hyperthermia induces an upregulation of NOS in several brain regions that seems to be instrumental in causing cell injury. Recent reports suggest that nitric oxide (NO) ca
Cancer patients' experiences of care related to pain management before and after palliative care referral
Pain is the main problem for patients with cancer referred to palliative care (PC). Pain management in PC requires a multidimensional approach. A questionnaire was used to determine cancer patients' experiences of care related to pain management, before and after being referred to PC, and to also discover possible correlations between pain control and other aspects of care. Seventy-five consecutiv
Evaluation of ecosystem dynamics, plant geography and terrestrial carbon cycling in the LPJ dynamic global vegetation model
The Lund-Potsdam-Jena Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (LPJ) combines process-based, large-scale representations of terrestrial vegetation dynamics and land-atmosphere carbon and water exchanges in a modular framework. Features include feedback through canopy conductance between photosynthesis and transpiration and interactive coupling between these 'fast' processes and other ecosystem processes in

Aromatic allylation via diazotization: Metal-free C-C bond formation
A new method for the synthesis of allyl aromatic compounds not involving any metal-containing reagent or catalyst has been developed. Arylamines substituted with a large number of different substituents were converted via diazotizative deamination with tert-butyl nitrite in allyl bromide and acetonitrile to the corresponding allyl aromatic compounds. The allylation reaction was found to be suitabl
A comparison of genome-scans performed in multicase families with systemic lupus erythematosus from different population groups
Systemic lupus erythematosus is a disease of unknown etiology. Multiple genetic factors are believed to be involved in its pathogenesis. In addition, and due to genetic heterogeneity, these factors and/or their combinations may be different in different ethnic groups, while some might be shared between populations. We have performed genome scans in multicase families from three different populatio
Substitution of conserved methionines by leucines in chloroplast small heat shock protein results in loss of redox-response but retained chaperone-like activity
During evolution of land plants, a specific motif occurred in the N-terminal domain of the chloroplast-localized small heat shock protein, Hsp21: a sequence with highly conserved methionines, which is predicted to form an amphipathic -helix with the methionines situated along one side. The functional role of these conserved methionines is not understood. We have found previously that treatment, wh
Climate change threats to plant diversity in Europe
Climate change has already triggered species distribution shifts in many parts of the world. Increasing impacts are expected for the future, yet few studies have aimed for a general understanding of the regional basis for species vulnerability. We projected late 21st century distributions for 1,350 European plants species under seven climate change scenarios. Application of the International Union
Prediction of Alzheimer's disease using a cerebrospinal fluid pattern of C-terminally truncated beta-amyloid peptides
Background: Identifying individuals at high risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) is important for future therapeutic strategies, and there is a clinical need for diagnostic biomarkers to identify incipient AD. Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate if the AD-associated A beta peptide pattern recently found in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) could discriminate between patients

Abandoned or Merely Lost in Translation?
The article’s findings show how in the Chinese reform-era of the 1980s and 90s, language control and strategic management of political discourse exercised by cadres in China's communist party propaganda apparatus helped forestall a development along Soviet lines ending with the sudden collapse of the socialist state. The findings indicate that the post-reform future—which in parts of China has, in

New approaches to the analysis of enzymatically hydrolyzed methyl cellulose. Part 2. Comparison of various enzyme preparations
In this part of our studies, dealing with new approaches to the analysis of enzymatically hydrolyzed methyl cellulose, five different enzymes or enzyme preparations containing endoglucanases (from Bacillus agaradhaerens Cel 5A, Trichoderma reesei, Trichoderma Viride, and two obtained from Trichoderma longibrachiatum) were used to hydrolyze six different methyl celluloses (MCs). The main goal was t
A heterogeneous model for the MCFC cathode
A steady state agglomerate model for the MCFC cathode which takes into account the heterogeneous structure of this porous electrode is presented. The resulting model equations are solved by means of the finite element method. Calculations have been performed on two different test structures and include the influence of kinetics, porosity, outer surface area and distribution of electrolyte film. Co
Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSC) Isolated from Human Osteosarcomas Show a High Progenitor Cell Frequency, Typical MSC Morphology, Surface Marker Profile, and Differentiation Capacity, and They Are Considerably Affected by Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors in Vitro
Lift-off process for nanoimprint lithography
We report a novel a lift-off method for nanoimprint lithography. This is a bi-layer method, using a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) on lift-off layer (LOL) resist scheme. For the imprint step, direct evidence for good pattern transfer down to 20 nm is shown. Oxygen plasma ashing is required to remove residual PMMA. A liquid solvent, MF 319, is used to transfer the pattern down to the silicon. The L
Long-Term Effects of Pallidal or Subthalamic Deep Brain Stimulation on Quality of Life in Parkinson's Disease
We assessed the effects of deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) or internal pallidum (GPi-DBS) on health-related quality of life (HrQoL) in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease participating in a previously reported multicenter trial. Sickness Impact Profile (SIP) questionnaires were available for analysis in a Subgroup of n = 20/20 patients with GPi-DBS and n = 45/49
Concerted evolution of two Mhc class II B loci in pheasants and domestic chickens
The major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) of the ring-necked pheasant contains two polymorphic Mhc class II B genes. We show here, by screening of a cDNA library and RT-PCR from RNA, that both of these loci, Phco-DAB1 and Phco-DAB2, normally are transcribed in the spleen. They differ mainly in the 3' untranslated (UT) region, with the transcript lengths, not including the poly(A) tails, being 1,1
