Rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensates in anharmonic potentials

Rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensates confined in anharmonic traps can exhibit a rich variety of vortex phases, including a vortex lattice, a vortex lattice with a hole, and a giant vortex. Using an augmented Thomas - Fermi variational approach to determine the ground state of the condensate in the rotating frame - valid for sufficiently strongly interacting condensates - we determine the tra

Randomised, placebo controlled trial of effect of a leukotriene receptor antagonist, montelukast, on tapering inhaled corticosteroids in asthmatic patients

OBJECTIVE: To determine the ability of montelukast, a leukotriene receptor antagonist, to allow tapering of inhaled corticosteroids in clinically stable asthmatic patients. DESIGN: Double blind, randomised, placebo controlled, parallel group study. After a single blind placebo run in period, during which (at most) two inhaled corticosteroids dose decreases occurred, qualifying, clinically stable p

Energy-Centric Scheduling for Real-Time Systems

Energy consumption is today an important design issue for all kinds of digital systems, and essential for the battery operated ones. An important fraction of this energy is dissipated on the processors running the application software. To reduce this energy consumption, one may, for instance, lower the processor clock frequency and supply voltage. This, however, might lead to a performance degrada

Modeling diffractive final states

I will discuss some aspects of modeling diffractive final states with event generators. In the first part of the talk I will discuss multiple scatterings in hard diffraction in hadron collisions and its effects on gap survival and hadronization corrections. In the second part I will argue that the study of the 'pomeron remnant' in hard diffraction at HERA may be the best way of distinguishing reso

Long-term outcome of acute hepatitis B and C in an outbreak of hepatitis in 1969-72

The objective of this study was to investigate the epidemiology, etiology, and long-term outcome of an extended outbreak of acute hepatitis that occurred in an area of Sweden between 1969 and 1972. The outbreak was analyzed retrospectively by retesting stored frozen serum samples for the presence of hepatitis A, B and C markers. The results were compared with the diagnoses that had been determined

Translation and validation of the Oxford-12 item knee score for use in Sweden

The Oxford-12 Item Knee Score is a recently developed and validated patient-completed outcome measure designed specifically for use with knee arthroplasty in the United Kingdom. We have translated this questionnaire into Swedish and tested the validity and reliability of the translated version in a cross-sectional study by a postal survey to 1,200 randomly selected patients from the Swedish Knee A

A society With or Without Drugs : Continuity and change in Drug Policies in Sweden and the Netherlands

Den nederländska strävar efteIn debates about the Swedish and Dutch drug policies are usually positioned as opposites. The goal for the Swedish drug policy is to create a 'drug-free society'; while in the Netherlands a harm reduction approach prevails. In this study a drug policy is considered a practice of formal social control that can develop differently depending on the contexts in which it emerged. The period studied sta

PACSIN 1 forms tetramers via its N-terminal F-BAR domain

The ability of protein kinase C and casein kinase 2 substrate in neurons (PACSIN)/syndapin proteins to self-polymerize is crucial for the simultaneous interactions with more than one Src homology 3 domain-binding partner or with lipid membranes. The assembly of this network has profound effects on the neural Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein-mediated attachment of the actin polymerization machinery

Biostatistik inom Vårdvetenskap - möjligheter och problem

"You can prove anything with statistics" is a well-known expression, and this might be true if the methods are not properly used and/or the results are not reviewed critically. This demands knowledge about statistical methodology and practice in critically analysis. However, it is not only the researcher that needs this kind of knowledge but also professionals in clinical practice who will be info

Holocene treeline history and climate change across northern Eurasia

Radiocarbon-dated macrofossils are used to document Holocene treeline history across northern Russia (including Siberia), Boreal forest development in this region commenced by 10,000 yr B.P, Over most of Russia, forest advanced to or near the current arctic coastline between 9000 and 7000 yr B.P. and retreated to its present position by between 4000 and 3000 yr B.P. Forest establishment and retrea

Tyrosyl radicals in enzyme catalysis: Some properties and a focus on photosynthetic water oxidation

Enzymes that require a redox-active amino acid for catalysis or function have emerged as a distinct class of proteins. For the tyrosine-based radical enzymes, we show that the spin-density distribution in the radical follows an odd alternate pattern that is invariant to within 10% across the class. General properties of the radical enzymes are summarized from which we conclude that their essential

Estimating surface soil moisture from soil color using image analysis

In this technical note the ability to estimate surface soil moisture (theta) from soil color using image analysis is evaluated. Four natural soils and uniform fine sand were used. Calibration soil samples with theta varying from 0 to 0.40 m(3) m(-3) in 0.05 m(3) m(-3) increments were prepared and photographed. The variations in soil color with theta were investigated in both the RGB (red, green, a

Prenylated isoflavanone from the roots of Erythrina sigmoidea

A novel prenylated isoflavanone, sigmoidin I, has been isolated from the roots of Erythrina sigmoidea, in addition to the known isoflavones, corylin and neobavaisoflavone and the known pterocarpan, phaseollidin. Its structure was established as 7,4'-dihydroxy-3'-methoxy-5'-(3-methylbut-2-enyl) isoflavanone by means of spectroscopic analyses and chemical transformations. Neobavaisoflavone displayed

The pressure profile in the Lund Pelletron accelerator with the newly installed terminal pumping in use

Terminal pumping has recently been installed in the Lund tandem Pelletron electrostatic accelerator. The equipment allows a higher gas density in the stripper and an improved vacuum in the accelerator tubes compared to the former system. This improvement has led to an increased beam transmission and to superior measurements for our accelerator mass spectrometry programme. The pressure profile of t
