A 1.8Gb/s 70.6pJ/b 128×16 link-adaptive near-optimal massive MIMO detector in 28nm UTBB-FDSOI

This work presents a 2.0mm2 128×16 massive MIMO detector IC that provides 21dB array gain and 16x multiplexing gain at the system level. The detector implements iterative expectation-propagation detection (EPD) for up to 256-QAM modulation. Tested with measured channel data [1], the detector achieves 4.3dB processing gain over state-of-the-art massive MlMo detectors [2, 3], enabling 2.7x reduction

Learning with and from each other : promoting international and interprofessional collaborations in physiotherapy education research – a literature review

Background: Best practice in physical therapy education requires good quality and quantity of research based on authentic learning settings and teaching practices. Facilitating large multisite research and large data sets for analysis has the potential to contribute to a strong research base. Clinical research makes use of international and interprofessional consortiums to produce quantity and qua

Serum Zonulin and endotoxin levels in exceptional longevity versus precocious myocardial infarction

Endotoxemia-induced inflammation has been associated with insulin resistance and atherosclerosis, ultimately increasing the risk of coronary heart disease. Increased intestinal permeability is an important event leading to endotoxemia. This study aims to elucidate the possible association between endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide) and zonulin (a biomarker of intestinal permeability) levels and the ris

Is the Milky Way still breathing? RAVE-Gaia streaming motions

We use data from the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) and the Tycho-Gaia astrometric solution (TGAS) catalogue to compute the velocity fields yielded by the radial (VR), azimuthal (Vϕ),and vertical (Vz) components of associated Galactocentric velocity. We search in particular for variation in all three velocity components with distance above and below the disc midplane, as well as how each compon

The Opportunity Costs of Mandatory Military Service : Evidence from a Draft Lottery

Conscription forces young men to serve in the military, irrespective of their opportunity costs. Using random assignment in the Danish draft lottery, we find a negative average effect of peacetime military service on earnings, an effect varying by ability, with high-ability men facing a $23,000 lifetime earnings penalty but with low-ability men facing none. This gradient is robust to different mea

A bark beetle attack caused elevated nitrate concentrations and acidification of soil water in a Norway spruce stand

A bark beetle attack in a Norway spruce forest in southwestern Sweden killed most trees, which however mostly remained standing, and caused elevated nitrate concentrations and subsequent acidification in the soil water. Long-term monitoring showed very low nitrate concentrations in the soil water before the bark beetle attack. High nitrate concentrations remained throughout five years after the in

Verification of wireless communication performance and robustness for automotive applications

Today's test methods used for verifying the performance and robustness of automotive applications using wireless communication are often based on fieldtrails, which are time consuming, costly, and not repeatable. Therefore, there is an urgent need for new verification methods that can be performed in lab environment, where the realistic radio propagation environment can be emulated. The telecom in

Algorithmic governance and the need for consumer empowerment in data-driven markets

The present article argues that the fact that personal data holds great value, in combination with a lack of transparency in its commercial use, leads to a need for consumer policy that strengthens consumer protection. The widespread practice of user agreements and consent-based regulation of personal data collection is not satisfactory for balancing these information-asymmetric markets. Estimating effectiveness of HPV vaccination against HPV infection from post-vaccination data in the absence of baseline data

Background: HPV vaccination programs have been introduced in large parts of the world, but monitoring of effectiveness is not routinely performed. Many countries introduced vaccination programs without establishing the baseline of HPV prevalences. We developed and validated methods to estimate protective effectiveness (PE) of vaccination from the post-vaccination data alone using references, which

Investigation of cerebrospinal fluid flow in the cerebral aqueduct using high-resolution phase contrast measurements at 7T MRI

Background: The cerebral aqueduct is a central conduit for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and non-invasive quantification of CSF flow in the aqueduct may be an important tool for diagnosis and follow-up of treatment. Magnetic resonance (MR) methods at clinical field strengths are limited by low spatial resolution. Purpose: To investigate the feasibility of high-resolution through-plane MR flow measure

Working towards paradise; an interdisciplinary theoretical framework for environmental peacebuilding

Exploring the human-environment nexus and linkages between (post-conflict) political developments and environmental dimensions, this paper reflects on the development of interdisciplinary theories of environmental peacebuilding. Theories of environmental peacebuilding come from a variety of different disciplines within the social and biophysical sciences; warfare ecology (Machlis et al. , 2011), e

A Non-convex Relaxation for Fixed-Rank Approximation

This paper considers the problem of finding a low rank matrix from observations of linear combinations of its elements. It is well known that if the problem fulfills a restricted isometry property (RIP), convex relaxations using the nuclear norm typically work well and come with theoretical performance guarantees. On the other hand these formulations suffer from a shrinking bias that can severely

Timber and timbre : Affordances of the simple-system flute

While the simple-system flute was primarily developed as a product of 19th century Western art music, it has since become established in other genres and traditions. The aim of the present study is to explore approaches towards the simple-system flute as it is used across genres and traditions today. These approaches are understood from the performers point of view, and focus on the relationship b

Identification of externally positive systems

We consider identification of externally positive linear discrete-time systems from input/output data. The proposed method is formulated as a semidefinite program, and is guaranteed to identify models that are ellipsoidal cone-invariant and, consequently, externally positive. We demonstrate empirically that this cone-invariance approach can significantly reduce the conservatism associated with met
