The meaning of meaning in biology and cognitive science. A semiotic reconstruction.

Abstract. The essay aims at integration of different concepts of meaning developed in semiotics, biology, and cognitive science, in a way that permits the formulation of issues involving evolution and development. The concept of sign in semiotics, just like the notion of representation in cognitive science, have either been used so broadly as to become almost meaningless, or they have been outrigh

A Chemometric Approach to Process Monitoring and Control - With Applications to Wastewater Treatment Operation

Inom processindustrin kan antalet vara mycket stort; hundratals och ibland tusentals värden loggas kontinuerligt med inIn this work, various aspects of multivariate monitoring and control of wastewater treatment operation are discussed. A number of important difficulties face operators and process engineers when handling online measurements from wastewater treatment processes. These include, for instance, a high number of correlated measurement variables, non-stationarities, nonlinearities and multiscale process b

I historiens ljus

This chapter deals with Drottningholm Palace during the 19th century and examines issues concerning architecture and interiors.

Towards a Green Energy Economy?

The global financial crisis provided an opportunity for countries to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels. Green energy technologies were heavily promoted as a way to reinvigorate economies, create jobs and reduce CO2 emissions. However, despite multiple policy efforts, data show that emissions continue to rise. The limited progress made in many parts of the world has been insufficient to offse

Values about management in client related and not client related jobs: a comparison between a ward in the geriatric care and in industrial company.

Values among individuals having client-related jobs and organisations in client related sectors might differ from values in their counterparts in jobs and sectors that are not client-related. It is possible that jobs that include interactions with other people demand more developed moral thinking. This report is a description of differences that has been found in a comparison between a ward in the

‘Death to Denmark!’: Deciphering a Global Event

This paper analyzes Danish reactions to the Muhammad cartoon caricature crisis, emphasizing the three narratives that dominate the discussion following the protests against the publication of the 12 cartoons in the Danish newspaper Jyllandsposten. The narratives were: freedom of speech versus intimidation by Muslims; harrasment of Muslims; and as a sign of failed integration of Muslims into Danish

Gold in Guleboda. A Byzantine gold coin from southern Småland

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the find of a Byzantine solidus in Guleboda, Älmeboda parish, southern Småland. This coin was found in an area that has never been central in any respect, and where at first sight there hardly seems to have been any Iron Age settlement at all. The purpose of the article is to try to contextualize the find. Other finds from the same site are discussed as well

Spin relaxation in InAs nanowires studied by tunable weak antilocalization

We report on a low-temperature magnetoconductance study to characterize the electrical and spin transport properties of n-type InAs nanowires grown by chemical beam epitaxy. A gate-controlled crossover from weak localization to weak antilocalization is observed. The measured magnetoconductance data agrees well with theory for one-dimensional quasi-ballistic systems and yields a spin relaxation len

Function Inlining in Modelica Models

The equation-based Modelica language allows the modeller to specify custom functions. The body of a function is an algorithm that contains procedural code to be executed when the function is called. This language feature is useful for many applications; however, the insertion of a function often prevent model optimizations that require the model to be formulated in purely declarative form by equat

New Families of LDPC Block Codes Formed by Terminating Irregular Protograph-Based LDPC Convolutional Codes

In this paper, we present a method of constructing new families of LDPC block code ensembles formed by terminating irregular protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. Using the accumulate-repeat-by-4-jagged-accumulate (AR4JA) protograph as an example, a density evolution analysis for the binary erasure channel shows that this flexible design technique gives rise to a large selection of LDPC block
