Independent component analysis reveals new and biologically significant structures in micro array data

Background: An alternative to standard approaches to uncover biologically meaningful structures in micro array data is to treat the data as a blind source separation ( BSS) problem. BSS attempts to separate a mixture of signals into their different sources and refers to the problem of recovering signals from several observed linear mixtures. In the context of micro array data, "sources" may corres

Långtidsöverlevnaden vid diabetes har successivt förbättrats. Lång sjukdomsduration kan ge information om protektiva möjligheter

Studies on patients with long-term diabetes survival without severe complications can give information about protective factors. Therefore, the present study aims to describe the long-term survival of patients with diabetes during successive periods following the introduction of insulin therapy in 1923. After registration in 1973 of the first local diabetic patient in Jonkoping with a fifty-year s

Biocompatibility of nitinol and stainless steel in the bladder: An experimental study

Purpose: We tested the biocompatibility of nitinol, a nickel titanium alloy, and stainless steel (SS) as bladder implant materials. Materials and Methods: Rats received a nitinol implant, an SS implant or were sham controls. Two, 3, 6 and 8 weeks following implantation 24-hour voiding behavior studies were per-formed to investigate bladder irritation. All animals were sacrificed 8 weeks after impl

Expression of human all-trans-retinoic acid receptor beta and its ligand-binding domain in Escherichia coli

all-trans-Retinoic acid, one of the hormonally active derivatives of vitamin A, occurs physiologically in plasma at a concentration below 10 nmol/l. The methods currently used for its quantification are based on HPLC, need about 1 ml of serum, are relatively laborious and thus not well suited for mass analysis. The affinity and specificity of retinoic acid receptors for all-trans-retinoic acid enc

Upconversion luminescence of CdTe nanoparticles

Efficient upconversion luminescence is observed from CdTe nanoparticles in solution and precipitated as solids. In the solids, the upconversion luminescence spectrum is significantly red shifted relative to the photoluminescence spectrum, whereas in solution, there is very little spectral shift. The upconversion luminescence exhibits a near-quadratic laser power dependence, both at room temperatur

Geometric foundation and quantification of the flow in a verbal expression

This article shows that language must be conceived of as a natural system that becomes structured through rhythmic driving forces. This gives weight to the hypothesis that rotatio¬nal dynamics is basic to the effects that selective textual movement patterns have on the evolution of texture, i.e. a text surface. The experimental procedure has been focused on the manipulation of text translation, as

Inflammation-sensitive plasma proteins are associated with future weight gain.

Cross-sectional studies have associated obesity and other components of the so-called metabolic syndrome with low-grade inflammation. The temporal and causal relations of this association have not been fully explored. This study explored whether elevated levels of inflammation-sensitive plasma proteins (ISPs) (fibrinogen, orosomucoid, {alpha}1-antitrypsin, haptoglobin, and ceruloplasmin) are assoc

Lipolytic activity of Staphylococcus aureus strains from disseminated and localized infections

Lipase production of 425 S. aureus strains isolated from patients with different clinical diagnoses and healthy carriers were measured by a specific method, using emulsified trioleoylglycerol substrate. Strains isolated from patients with septicemia showed significantly higher lipase activity than osteomyelitis strains (p = 0.011), impetigo strains (p = 0.002) and strains isolated from healthy rel

The Lifetime of the Proton-decaying 8915 keV State in 58Cu

Energy correlations between gamma -ray transitions and the prompt proton decay line in Cu-58 were studied by means of the fusion-evaporation reaction Ca-40(Mg-24,1 alpha 1p1n) using the EUROBALL spectrometer coupled to ancillary detector devices. A lifetime of 0.06 < tau < 0.58 ps for the 8915 keV proton-decaying state in Cu-58 is deduced. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
