Dynamics of highly concentrated protein solutions around the denaturing transition
Using both quasi-elastic and fixed-window neutron spectroscopy, we study the dynamics of highly concentrated aqueous protein solutions of bovine serum albumin around the denaturing transition. For the temperature range 280 K < T < 370 K, the total mean-squared displacement 〈u 2〉 is recorded. Below and above the denaturing, we observe that 〈u 2〉 increases monotonically with T, but at the denaturing

Hydroxyazole scaffold-based Plasmodium falciparum dihydroorotate dehydrogenase inhibitors : Synthesis, biological evaluation and X-ray structural studies
Plasmodium falciparum dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (PfDHODH) has been clinically validated as a target for antimalarial drug discovery, as a triazolopyrimidine class inhibitor (DSM265) is currently undergoing clinical development. Here, we have identified new hydroxyazole scaffold-based PfDHODH inhibitors belonging to two different chemical series. The first series was designed by a scaffold hoppi
Familial Mortality Risks in Patients With Heart Failure : A Swedish Sibling Study
Background The influence of familial factors on the prognosis of heart failure (HF) is unknown. This nationwide follow‐up study aimed to determine familial mortality risks of HF among Swedish siblings hospitalized for HF. Methods and Results We linked several Swedish nationwide registers for individuals aged 0 to 80 years. The study population consisted of 373 people hospitalized for HF for the

Exophiala macquariensis sp. nov., a cold adapted black yeast species recovered from a hydrocarbon contaminated sub-Antarctic soil
A new black yeast species, Exophiala macquariensis is described that is a member of the ascomycete family Herpotrichiellaceae, order Chaetothyriales. The genus Exophiala is comprised of opportunistic pathogens isolated from clinical specimens as well as species recovered from hydrocarbon contaminated environments. Several species have been reported to be able to degrade benzene, toluene, ethylbenz
“Where and how do you buy medicines?” A pilot survey of consumption strategies among the public in Sweden
Substandard and falsified (SF) medical products are a major danger to public health. They affect every region of the world, and have been identified in all major therapeutic categories. Studies from medicine, pharmacology, law and public health dominate this research area with a focus on the supply side. However, the spread of SF medical products cannot be fully understood without information abou
Strategisk miljöbedömning för hållbar samhällsplanering. : Slutrapport från forskningsprogrammet SPEAK
The general aim of the research programme SPEAK (Sustainable Planning andEnvironmental Assessment Knowledge, www.speakproject.se) was to generateknowledge on, and to strengthen the role of strategic environmental assessment(SEA) in planning as a measure to attain the environmental quality objectives andto promote sustainable development. The SPEAK programme had atransdisciplinary point of departur
The complex relation between receptivity to pseudo-profound bullshit and political ideology
This research systematically mapped the relationship between political ideology and receptivity to pseudo-profound bullshit—that is, obscure sentences constructed to impress others rather than convey truth. Among Swedish adults (N = 985), bullshit receptivity was (a) robustly positively associated with socially conservative (vs. liberal) self-placement, resistance to change, and particularly bindi
On the Phase Behaviour of Soft Matter: Understanding Complex Interactions via Quantitative Imaging
A first lesson in physical chemistry invariably starts with an example of water existing in three states, or phases - gaseous (water vapour), liquid (water from the tap) and solid (ice cubes). Such phase transitions are easily observed, but their underlying cause is not so evident. Atoms and molecules are difficult to follow due to their minute size and rapid movements. So, in order to investigateThe effect of microscopic colloid interactions on the resultant macroscopic phase behaviour is a frequently studied topic in soft matter resarch, and lies at the heart of this thesis. Key structural and dynamic properties of colloidal model systems across liquid-solid transitions are tracked using optical imaging techniques. The first studied system comprises of thermosensitive microgels. These ar

The Three Axial Perineal Evaluation (TAPE) score : A new scoring system for comprehensive evaluation of pelvic floor function
Aim: Abnormalities of one pelvic floor compartment are usually associated with anomalies in the other compartments. Therapies which specifically address one clinical problem may potentially adversely affect other pelvic floor activities. A new comprehensive holistic scoring system defining global pelvic function is presented. Method: A novel scoring system with a software program is presented expr
