Intra- and inter-rater reliability of standing hip flexion strength and supine lumbo-pelvic control in patients with longstanding hip and groin pain
JitterTime 1.0—Reference Manual
This technical report describes JitterTime, a Matlab toolbox for calculating the time-varying state covariance of a mixed continuous/discrete linear system driven by white noise. It also integrates a quadratic cost function for the system. The passing of time and the updating of the discrete-time systems are explicitly managed by the user in a simulation run. Since the timing is completely handled
Non-Linear Phenomena in Contemporary Vocal Music
Complex and multiphonic voice signals of vocal improvisors are analyzed within the framework of nonlinear dynamics. Evidence is given that nonlinear phenomena are extensively used by performers associated with contemporary music. Narrow-band spectrograms of complex vocalizations are used to visualize the appearance of nonlinear phenomena (spectral bifurcation diagrams). Possible production mechani
Polyacrylamides as immobilization supports for use of hydrolytic enzymes in organic media
Polyacrylamide beads and celite were used for immobilization of bovine α-chymotrypsin and lipase B from Candida antarctica. Polyacrylamides with a high degree of cross-linking afforded high catalytic rates when used as immobilization matrices. Derivatization of the polymer with carboxyl and tertiary amino groups prior to immobilization caused no significant changes in α-chymotrypsin behavior. The
Tailoring the Microenvironment of Enzymes in Water-Poor Media
Solubilization of enzymes in apolar solvents via noncovalent complex formation with soluble polymers
Effects of acetonitrile-water mixtures on α-chymotrypsin catalyzed dipeptide synthesis
α-Chymotrpysin (EC 3.4 21.1) was immobilized by deposition on celite and subsequent cross-linking with glutaraldehyde. The effects of different mixtures of aqueous buffer and acetonitrile on the immobilized preparation were evaluated using a dipeptide synthesis as model reaction. The initial reaction rate at 6-95% of water increased with increasing water content. The maximum yield of peptide had t
Enzyme-catalysed lipid modification
Triglyceride interesterification by lipases. 3. Alcoholysis of pure triglycerides
Lipase-catalyzed alcoholysis of triolein dissolved in ethanol or isopropanol for the formation of ethyl and isopropyl esters was investigated. Of 16 lipases screened, Amano lipase from P. fluorescens was selected for investigation of the effects of basic reaction conditions on alcoholysis yields. Ethanolysis yields were only slightly affected by water additions to immobilized lipase preparations.
Influence of solvent and water activity on kinetically controlled peptide synthesis
α-Chymotrypsin deposited on Celite was used to catalyse peptide synthesis reactions between N-protected amino acid esters and leucine amide in organic media with low water content. The influence of the solvent and the thermodynamic water activity on the reaction kinetics was studied. The substrate specificity in the reactions was shown to be a combination of the substrate specificity of the enzyme
Prevalence of dementia diagnosis not otherwise specified in eight European countries A cross-sectional cohort study
BackgroundDementia is a syndrome, with a wide range of symptoms. It is important to have a timely diagnosis during the disease course to reduce the risk of medication errors, enable future care planning for the patient and their relatives thereby optimizing quality of life (QoL). For this reason, it is important to avoid a diagnosis of dementia not otherwise specified (DNOS) and instead obtain a d
Determinants of influenza vaccination among the adult and older Italian population with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease : a secondary analysis of the multipurpose ISTAT survey on health and health care use
We analyzed seasonal flu vaccination rates among the Italian population suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in order to identify socio-demographic and clinical determinants for vaccination. We used data from the survey "Health and health care use in Italy", which interviewed 5,935 persons (age 15 - 102 years) suffering from COPD in the period 2004-2005. For each respondent,
Organic solvent changes the chymotrypsin specificity with respect to nucleophiles
In α-chymotrypsin-catalyzed acyl-transfer reactions in water the specificity of the enzyme (the nucleophile reactivity of amino acid amides) is correlated with the substrate hydrophobicity and increases as the hydrophobicity of the side chain of the amino acid amides is increased. In a low water system (4% H2O) bulky amino acid amides are less efficient nucleophiles. The specificity of α-chymotryp
The association between knee confidence and muscle power, hop performance, and movement quality in people with anterior cruciate ligament injury at high risk of knee osteoarthritis
Activity and stability of horse‐liver alcohol dehydrogenase in sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate/cyclohexane reverse micelles
Horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.1) solubilized in sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate (AOT)/cyclohexane reverse micelles was used for the oxidation of ethanol and reduction of cyclohexanone in a coupled substrate/coenzyme recycling system. The activity of the enzyme was studied as a function of pH and water content. The enzyme was optimally active in microemulsions prepared with buffer of pH
