Role of TLR4 in Escherichia coli urinary tract infection

Vissa bakterier klarar dock att etablera sig trots dIn this thesis we have used P fimbriated E. coli as a model to investigate the mechanisms of bacterial recognition and cell activation by the urinary tract (UT) epithelium. We show that Toll like receptor 4 (TLR4) is crucial for the recognition and host response to P fimbriated E. coli. This response was independent of LPS and did not require CD14. TLR4 was abundant on epithelial cells throughout

Cellbiologi

Knowledge Management: an Open Systems Approach

Nowadays, organizations pursue their aims in a context of distributed collaboration, creating a need not only for supporting ICT systems, but for a hu-man-centred focus in which individual and group sense-making and learning are supported by appropriate toolsets. We argue that development of such toolsets re-quires an open systems approach. This paper discusses one example: non-competitive benchma

The diversity of eye optics

This chapter starts with a description of the optics of camera-type eyes, in which an image is projected upon a retina with cornea and lens as refracting elements. Ray tracing is explained with the human eye as an example of a terrestrial vertebrate's eye. Then the comparison is made to camera eyes of aquatic and amphibious animals, with an explanation of different kinds of aberrations, difficulti

Carotid atherosclerosis in relation to socioeconomic status and gender. With special reference to the mediating role of health-related behaviours and psychosocial stressors.

The declining trend in cardiovascular mortality rates seen since the mid-1970s in Western countries have been more pronounced for people in higher socioeconomic status (SES) groups. The fact that established risk factors, are limited in explaining the socioeconomic differences in cardiovascular disease (CVD) has opened new fields of research. One such field is the role of SES in the preclinical (a

Protein Dynamics Studied by NMR Spin Relaxation. Conformational Transitions of a Calmodulin Mutant

Binding of calcium to the protein calmodulin leads to molecular reorganization that enables interaction with target peptides and activation of downstream processes. I have studied the dynamics of the calcium-loaded form of a C-terminal calmodulin mutant (E140Q-Tr2C) using NMR spin relaxation experiments. E140Q-Tr2C exhibits global conformational exchange on the microsecond time-scale. The populati

What is Wrong with Extinction?

The aim of this investigation is to answer the question of why it is prima facie morally wrong to cause or contribute to the extinction of species. The first potential answer investigated in the book is that other species are instrumentally valuable for human beings. The results of this part of the investigation are that many species are instrumentally valuable for human beings but that not all sp

Feedback regulation of polyamine biosynthesis: a characterization at the molecular level

Polyaminer, som kemiskt sett är positivt The polyamines putrescine, spermidine and spermine are essential for cell growth and differentiation. The biosynthesis of polyamines are tightly regulated by feedback mechanisms involving two enzymes, namely ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) and S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase (AdoMetDC). This thesis deals with the mechanisms behind the polyamine-mediated feedback control of these enzymes. The poly

Non-contact excitation of fundamental resonance frequencies of an asphalt concrete specimen

Impact hammer and non-contact speaker excitation were applied to an asphalt concrete, a PVC-U and a concrete specimen to measure the fundamental longitudinal resonance frequency at different strain levels. The impact and the noncontact excitation methods resulted in similar resonance frequencies for the undamaged asphalt concrete and for the PVC-U specimen. However, the two excitation approaches g
