En SAOB-artikel växer fram

This article presents a specific example of how the work of an editor of the comprehensive historical Swedish dictionary, published by the Swedish Academy, (SAOB) proceeds. The example concerns the Swedish preposition under ’under’ and accurately describes the process of writing that SAOB entry. Drawing from this particular word, it is shown how etymology governs also the semantic description, on

Controlling graphene corrugation on lattice-mismatched substrates

By means of synchrotron-radiation-based core-level spectroscopies we demonstrate that the degree of corrugation in graphene nanomesh on lattice-mismatched transition-metal substrates critically depends on the strength of chemical bonding at the interface. The degree of interfacial orbital hybridization between graphene and metal states is rising in the series Pt(111)-Ir(111)-Rh(111)-Ru(0001). This

Test Analysis Verification Using Open Software

Teaching the topic of structural dynamics in any engineering field is a true challenge due to the wide span of the underlying subjects like mathematics, mechanics (both rigid-body and continuum mechanics), numerical analysis, random data analysis and physical understanding. In this article we present a pedagogical example of using experimental modal analysis to verify and calibrate a finite-elemen

Tyrosine kinase inhibition in renal cell carcinoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumours: case reports

Background: Sunitinib malate is approved multinationally for the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) and advanced imatinib-refractory gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST). Greater exposure to sunitinib is associated with improved efficacy. Therefore, minimising the impact of adverse events (AEs) on patient quality of life is important to enable patients to achieve optimal exposur

Agonistic Vocalisations in Domestic Cats : A Case Study

Introducing a new cat to a home with resident cats may lead to stress, aggression and even fights. In this case study 468 agonistic cat vocalisations were recorded as one cat was introduced to three resident cats in her new home. Six vocalisation types were identified: growl, howl, howl-growl, hiss, spit and snarl. Numerous other intermediate and complex vocalisations were also observed. An acoust

Landscape cultivation alters delta Si-30 signature in terrestrial ecosystems

Despite increasing recognition of the relevance of biological cycling for Si cycling in ecosystems and for Si export from soils to fluvial systems, effects of human cultivation on the Si cycle are still relatively understudied. Here we examined stable Si isotope (delta Si-30) signatures in soil water samples across a temperate land use gradient. We show that - independent of geological and climato

Search for heavy neutrinos and right-handed W bosons in events with two leptons and jets in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This letter reports on a search for hypothetical heavy neutrinos, N, and right-handed gauge bosons, W-R, in events with high transverse momentum objects which include two reconstructed leptons and at least one hadronic jet. The results were obtained from data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.1 fb(-1) collected in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at t

Factors influencing iron nutrition among one-year-old healthy children in Sweden.

Aims and objectives. To describe possible social, nutritional and biological factors influencing iron intake and iron status among healthy one-year-old children in southern Sweden. Background. Iron deficiency is one of the most important nutritional disorders and increases the risk of delayed mental and motor development. Children are at risk because of rapid growth, which entails relatively high

The ESR1 (6q25) Locus Is Associated with Calcaneal Ultrasound Parameters and Radial Volumetric Bone Mineral Density in European Men

Purpose: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified 6q25, which incorporates the oestrogen receptor alpha gene (ESR1), as a quantitative trait locus for areal bone mineral density (BMDa) of the hip and lumbar spine. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of this locus on other bone health outcomes; calcaneal ultrasound (QUS) parameters, radial peripheral quantitative comp

Quantifying coronary sinus flow and global LV perfusion at 3T

Abstract Background: Despite the large availability of 3T MR scanners and the potential of high field imaging, this technical platform has yet to prove its usefulness in the cardiac MR setting, where 1.5T remains the established standard. Global perfusion of the left ventricle, as well as the coronary flow reserve (CFR), can provide relevant diagnostic information, and MR measurements of these par

"A syndrome so characteristic" Molecular and clinical studies of Fusobacterium necrophorum and Lemierre's syndrome

Lemierre’s syndrome is caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum and involves tonsillitis, jugular vein thrombophlebitis and septic pulmonary emboli. The first studies underlying this thesis focused on bacterial interaction with coagulation. The contact system initiates the intrinsic pathway of coagulation and the release of the pro-inflammatory peptide bradykinin. We found that the contact system was a

Changes in clot lysis levels of reteplase and streptokinase following continuous wave ultrasound exposure, at ultrasound intensities following attenuation from the skull bone

Background: Ultrasound (US) has been used to enhance thrombolytic therapy in the treatment of stroke. Considerable attenuation of US intensity is however noted if US is applied over the temporal bone. The aim of this study was therefore to explore possible changes in the effect of thrombolytic drugs during low-intensity, high-frequency continuous-wave ultrasound (CW-US) exposure. Methods: Clots we

The Influence of Different Processing Stages on Particle Size, Microstructure, and Appearance of Dark Chocolate

The effect of different process stages on microstructural and visual properties of dark chocolate was studied. Samples were obtained at each phase of the manufacture process: mixing, prerefining, refining, conching, and tempering. A laser light diffraction technique and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) were used to study the particle size distribution (PSD) and to analyze modifica

Some small-emittance light-source lattices with multi-bend achromats

Two examples of low-emittance light-source lattices are discussed. Both use similar building blocks consisting of 7-bend achromats. The small emittances generated by these lattices are further reduced by the introduction of insertion devices (IDs), resulting in beam emittance values ranging from 0.2 to 0.9 nm rad, depending on the number of achromats chosen. The two examples discussed here are rin
