Ecology of pollinators, pests and natural enemies in agricultural landscapes : ensuring a sustainable supply of clover seeds
The human population and its food consumption continues to grow and the environmental impact of meeting future food demands depends on how we expand the food supply. Already, agricultural intensification has led to biodiversity declines, which in turn can have direct and indirect effects on agricultural production. For future sustainable production there is a need to support ecosystems and their a

Experience and Entrepreneurship : A Career Transition Perspective
The authors cast entrepreneurship as one of three career choices—remaining with one’s employer, changing employers, or engaging in entrepreneurship—and theorize how the likelihood of entrepreneurship evolves over one’s career. They empirically demonstrate an inverted U-shaped relationship between accumulated experience and entrepreneurship across various industries and jobs. The authors highlight

Revolving permanent magnet causes rotating particle motion that makes new detection schemes possible in magnetomotive ultrasound
Magnetomotive ultrasound, MMUS, can reveal the presence of a magnetic contrast agent by applying an external magnetic field. If the interaction between the agent and the field is strong enough, a movement that can be detected by ultrasound is induced in the surrounding tissue, thereby inferring the contrast agent distribution. Electromagnets have been used to generate the necessary magnetic field,

Green Transformation: Lessons from the Fuel Cell Innovation System in Taiwan
This study applies the technological innovation system framework to the case of the fuel cell sector in Taiwan. Many Asian latecomers, such as Taiwan, tend to adopt a top-down approach to emphasize the importance of environmental issues but the result is limited. We aim to take Taiwan’s fuel cell innovation system as an example to explore why Taiwan has formulated a technological innovation system
SimCA∗ : A control-theoretic approach to handle uncertainty in self-adaptive systems with guarantees
Self-adaptation provides a principled way to deal with software systems' uncertainty during operation. Examples of such uncertainties are disturbances in the environment, variations in sensor readings, and changes in user requirements. As more systems with strict goals require self-adaptation, the need for formal guarantees in self-adaptive systems is becoming a high-priority concern. Designing se

Pharmacokinetics of glibenclamide and its metabolites in diabetic patients with impaired renal function
BACKGROUND: Glibenclamide (Gb) may provoke long-lasting hypoglycaemic reactions, and one of the known risk factors is impaired renal function. We have demonstrated Gb to have a terminal elimination half-life of 15 h, and the main metabolites have a hypoglycaemic effect. With few exceptions, detailed studies on second generation sulphonylureas in diabetics with impaired renal function are lacking.
Sexual professionalism: for whom? The case of sexual facilitation in Swedish personal assistance services
Sexuality is a taboo subject in disability services, leading to insecurity for both service users and personnel about how to handle upcoming situations. In Sweden, there is also a lack of policy in this area, highlighting the need to study sexuality both as an individual and a political, and in this case also, depoliticized issue. A critical feminist policy analysis reveals that norms around disab
The typology of sound symbolism : Defining macro-concepts via their semantic and phonetic features
Sound symbolism emerged as a prevalent component in the origin and development of language. However, as previous studies have either been lacking in scope or in phonetic granularity, the present study investigates the phonetic and semantic features involved from a bottom-up perspective. By analyzing the phonemes of 344 near-universal concepts in 245 language families, we establish 125 sound-meanin
Quantitative characterization of aberrations in x-ray optics
Due to the weak interaction of X-rays with matter and their small wavelength on the atomic scale, stringent requirements are put on X-ray optics manufacturing and metrology. As a result, these optics often suffer from aberrations. Until now, X-ray optics were mainly characterized by their focal spot size and efficiency. How- ever, both measures provide only insufficient information about optics qu

Electronic publishing and institutional archives – a scholarship report from CaliforniaIn June 2005 Linda Gustafsson and Kristina Lindgren had the opportunity to make a one week visit to the library at Caltech University, Pasadena in California. The aim was to see how the library staff worked with e-publishing together with the researchers at the campus. As researchers are an important user group

Selective mode of action of guanidine-containing non-peptides at human NPFF receptors
The binding pocket of both NPFF receptors was investigated, focusing on subtype-selective behavior. By use of four nonpeptidic compounds and the peptide mimetics RF9 and BIBP3226, agonistic and antagonistic properties were characterized. A set of Ala receptor mutants was generated. The binding pocket was narrowed down to the upper part of transmembrane helices V, VI, VII and the extracellular loop
