Disaster Risk Information Access in Karnali Province, Nepal: An egocentric social network analysis

Globally, climate change is exacerbating natural hazard frequencies and intensities. The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 places a high priority on the strengthening of understanding of disaster risk, primarily through strengthening access to disaster risk information. This priority is further affirmed in the Nepali National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategic Plan of Action 20

Expression and Purification of BoGal36A Wild-type and W297F Mutant

This study investigated the enzyme BoGal36A, produced by the gut bacterium Bacteroides ovatus. BoGal36A is an alpha-galactosidase, an enzyme that breaks down complex sugars. Unlike most alpha-galactosidases from the GH36 family, BoGal36A appears to cleave internal glycosidic bonds. In this study, the wild-type BoGal36A and mutant W297F was expressed in E. coli BL21 (DE3) cells and purified subsequ

Left Ventricular Diastolic Function in Children with Atrial Septal Defects Improves After Closure by Means of Increased Hydraulic Force.

Hydraulic force aids diastolic filling of the left ventricle (LV) by facilitating basal movement of the atrioventricular plane. The short-axis atrioventricular area difference (AVAD) determines direction and magnitude of this force. Patients with atrial septal defect (ASD) have reduced LV filling due to the left-to-right shunt across the atrial septum and thus potentially altered hydraulic force.

Expanding an adaptive learning-rate algorithm to handle mini-batch training

Resilient backpropagation, Rprop, is a robust and accurate optimization method used in neural network training with batch-learning. As a result of its adaptive step sizes, Rprop requires copious amounts of data at each iteration which slows it down when dealing with large datasets, compared with mini-batch methods. We create and empirically evaluate a version of Rprop, S-Rprop, which can handle mi

Läsfrämjande lärosätesbibliotek - En kvalitativ studie om studenters deltagande i en bokcirkel på ett lärosätesbibliotek

Promoting reading through book clubs in academic libraries is a relatively new phenomenon in Sweden, despite the Swedish Library Act mandating that all pub-licly funded libraries should "promote the position of literature" (SFS 2013:801). In the Swedish context, there is limited research on reading promotion in aca-demic libraries. Internationally, some studies exist, but few employ a ca

Advanced Monitoring of H2S Injection through the Coupling of Reactive Transport Models and Geophysical Responses

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), an environmentally harmful pollutant, is a byproduct of geothermal energy production. To reduce the H2S emissions, H2S-charged water is injected into the basaltic subsurface, where it mineralizes to iron sulfides. Here, we couple geophysical induced polarization (IP) measurements in H2S injection wells and geochemical reactive transport models (RTM) to monitor the H2S stora

Impact of extruded mortar joints on the hygrothermal performance of brick veneer walls : A probabilistic study

Mortar extrusion during bricklaying, resulting from suboptimal workmanship, may act as a bridge linking clay brick masonry claddings and adjacent layers (e.g., insulation or weather-resistant barriers), thereby, facilitating water penetration into the adjacent layer owing to wind-driven rain (WDR). Despite the significant effect of water penetration on the hygrothermal performance of building enve

TOWARDS ZERO EMISSION BUILDINGS: A Holistic Guide for Homeowners through EPBD Compliance and the Renovation Passport Framework

This master thesis presents a suggested Renovation Passport for two typical 1960s single-family houses. Following the recently approved Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EU 2024/1275A), all member states are to implement voluntary Renovation Passports by 2026, which will aid in reaching the 2050 goal of a decarbonized building stock. The aim of Renovation Passports is to provide long-ter

A Computational Pipeline to Study Donor Substrate Binding to the Wild-Type and Mutants of a Xanthan Gum Glycosyltransferase

Det finns en mängd olika varianter av kolhydrater som används inom allt från mPolysaccharides are a versatile group of biopolymers widely utilized in a range of industries, from food and medicine to construction. Engineering of the enzymes involved in the synthesis of polysaccharides could provide a way to chemically modify the composition, and therefore be used as a tool to obtain polysaccharides with new desired properties. In this thesis, the substrate binding to the don

Crossing the river while feeling for stones : Challenges of river basin governance in Vietnam

Water scarcity is increasing across different geographical regions of Vietnam. Central drivers of scarcity include population growth and climate change which increase demand and sectoral competition. The legal system is keeping pace to address this trend, but gaps remain in terms of implementation and enforcement. This purpose of this study was to improve the understanding of those gaps via polyce

Overcoming the Investment Gap: A Multiple Case Study of Strategy Development in Swedish Water & Wastewater Organisations

Sweden grapples with a critical issue: its extensive water infrastructure is nearing the end of its lifespan. While investment shortfalls increase this challenge, concerns linger about the potential mismanagement of existing assets. This research investigates how Swedish water utilities are strategically managing their ageing infrastructure. By exploring their utilisation strategies, the study aim

CysK2 from Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an O-phospho-L-serine-dependent S-sulfocysteine synthase

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is dependent on cysteine biosynthesis, and reduced sulfur compounds such as mycothiol synthesized from cysteine serve in first-line defense mechanisms against oxidative stress imposed by macrophages. Two biosynthetic routes to L-cysteine, each with its own specific cysteine synthase (CysK1 and CysM), have been described in M. tuberculosis, but the function of a third put

Airing with side-hung and pivot-hung windows - Simulations and heat loss

Efforts to reduce energy consumption in buildings have increased with the pending impact of climate change. Heat losses through airing behaviours remain a largely unknown factor due to the variety of reasons for opening a window, making generalization difficult. Currently, an estimation of 4 kWh/m2 heated area for airing heat loss is assumed in Sweden. Additionally, the resulting airflow from open

Climate Resilience through Shock-Sensitive Social Protection: The Role of Social Protection Systems during Climate Shocks in Malawi

Malawi is prone to compounding climate shocks, the main climate risks being extreme rainfall/floods and dry spells. To provide support to poor and vulnerable households, the country has an established social protection system, including a Social Cash Transfer Program (SCTP), which contains shock-sensitive social protection mechanisms to increase the coping capacity of beneficiaries to climate shoc
