First-pass metabolism limits the intestinal absorption of enteral alpha-ketoglutarate in young pigs

Our results in a previous study indicated that the portal absorption of intragastrically fed alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) was limited in young pigs. Our aim was to quantify the net portal absorption, first-pass metabolism, and whole-body flux of enterally infused AKG. In study 1, we quantified the net portal nutrient absorption in young pigs (n = 9) given an intraduodenal infusion of milk replacer [1

The development of public attitudes towards the Stockholm congestion trial

A full-scale congestion charging trial was carried out in Stockholm the first months of 2006. Almost half of respondents in a county-wide survey stated that they changed their attitudes towards congestion charges during the trial. Most of them became more positive. An analysis of media shows that the attitudinal change in media towards the trial coincides with the attitudinal change of the public.

Terrestrial Gross Carbon Dioxide Uptake: Global Distribution and Covariation with Climate

Terrestrial gross primary production (GPP) is the largest global CO2 flux driving several ecosystem functions. We provide an observation-based estimate of this flux at 123 +/- 8 petagrams of carbon per year (Pg C year(-1)) using eddy covariance flux data and various diagnostic models. Tropical forests and savannahs account for 60%. GPP over 40% of the vegetated land is associated with precipitatio

Noncrossed Product Matrix Subrings and Ideals of Graded Rings

We show that if a groupoid graded ring has a certain nonzero ideal property and the principal component of the ring is commutative, then the intersection of a nonzero twosided ideal of the ring with the commutant of the principal component of the ring is nonzero. Furthermore, we show that for a skew groupoid ring with commutative principal component, the principal component is maximal commutative

Too wet for frogs: changes in a tropical leaf litter community coincide with La Nina

Extreme climatic events such as the El Nino Southern Oscillation profoundly affect many plants and animals, including amphibians, which are strongly negatively affected by drought conditions. How amphibians respond to exceptionally high precipitation as observed in La Nina events, however, remains unclear. We document the correlation between the exceedingly wet 2010-2012 La Nina and community-leve

Achievable Rates of IID Gaussian Symbols on the Non-Coherent Block-Fading Channel Without Channel Distribution Knowledge at the Receiver

Consider receivers that do not exploit any knowledge of the channel distribution in non-coherent block-fading multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels. The main contribution of this letter is to derive a semi-analytical semi-numerical lower bound to the achieveble rate of such receivers. The bound is of operational meaning since practical receivers can achieve the lower bound. Several numeri

Enhanced Protein Steering: Cooperative Electrostatic and van der Waals Forces in Antigen-Antibody Complexes.

We study the association of the cationic protein lysozyme with several almost neutral protein fragments but with highly uneven charge distributions. Using mesoscopic protein models, we show how electrostatic interactions can align or steer protein complexes into specific constellations dictated by the specific charge distributions of the interacting biomolecules. Including van der Waals forces sig

Dijet angular distributions at root s=14 TeV

We present a Monte Carlo study of dijet angular distributions at root s = 14 TeV. First we perform a next-to- leading order QCD study; we calculate the distributions in four different bins of dijet invariant mass using different Monte Carlo programs and different jet algorithms, and we also investigate the systematic uncertainties coming from the choice of the parton distribution functions and the

Evaluation of soil respiration characteristics to assess heavy-metal effects on soil-microorganisms using glutamic-acid as a substrate

Computerized continuous monitoring of soil respiration rates before and during glutamic acid decomposition in heavy metal polluted soils was used to determine four microbial parameters: basal respiration rate, substrate induced respiration rate, lag time before the exponential increase of the soil respiration rate and the specific respiration increment during the exponential phase. Both smelter- a

Oxidation of pyrite grains: A Mossbauer spectroscopy and mineral magnetism study

Fe2+ in pyrite is found in a low-spin d(6) configuration, a necessary condition for diamagnetic and semi-conducting properties of material. The semi-conducting property of pyrite has been studied since the time when pyrite was used as a rectifier in early radios. Pyrite posses the highest possible crystal field stabilisation energy and offers a better altemative as solar material compared to Si- b

Using on-top pair density for construction of correlation functionals for multideterminant wave functions

The value of the two-particle density function at coalescence is frequently used as an additional variable for formulating approximate exchange-correlation or correlation functionals. Here, its applications as one of the key variables for the construction of new DFT (preferably multi-determinant) functionals is investigated. The basic formalism is presented and it is shown that this replacement av

A bilberry drink with fermented oatmeal decreases postprandial insulin demand in young healthy adults

Background: in traditional medicine, blueberries have been used to facilitate blood glucose regulation in type 2 diabetes. Recent studies in diabetic mice have indicated facilitated glycaemic regulation following dietary supplementation with extracts from European blueberries, also called bilberries, (Vaccinium myrtillus). The purpose of the present study was to investigate the impact of fermented

Uterine artery Doppler in high-risk pregnancies at 23-24 gestational weeks is of value in predicting adverse outcome of pregnancy and selecting cases for more intense surveillance

ObjectiveTo assess the role of the placental arterial Doppler examination at 23-24 gestational weeks for predicting adverse perinatal outcome in high-risk pregnancies. DesignRetrospective register study. SettingSkane University Hospital in Malmo. PopulationSix hundred and forty-five women with high-risk pregnancies, without fetal malformations or chromosomal abnormalities. MethodsPlacental (uterin

Atomoxetine improves patient and family coping in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in Swedish children and adolescents

This 10-week study assessed the efficacy of atomoxetine in combination with psychoeducation compared to placebo and psychoeducation in the improvement of Quality of Life in Swedish stimulant-naive children and adolescents with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. A total of 99 patients were treated with atomoxetine (49 patients) or placebo (50 patients) for 10 weeks and assessed regarding bro

Genetic modeling of the Hippo pathway in hematopoietic stem cells

All blodceller härstammar från en liten population med blodstamceller somHematopoiesis is the process of blood formation from a limited pool of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). These rare stem cells can both self-renew to maintain the HSC pool, and differentiate to continuously replenish lost blood cells. The mechanisms of HSC regulation are not fully known. The aim of this thesis was to study the role of the Hippo signaling pathway in HSCs. The Hippo pathway is a newl
