A simple combined sample-standard bracketing and inter-element correction procedure for accurate mass bias correction and precise Zn and Cu isotope ratio measurements

The modified sample-standard bracketing method (m-SSB) combines a sample-standard bracketing and an inter-element correction procedure to account for instrumental mass fractionation during multi-collector ICP-MS measurements. Precisions for Cu and Zn isotopes in plant and experimental granite leachate samples are in line with those obtained using other mass bias correction techniques. In addition,

A Skull Might Lie : Modeling Ancestral Ranges and Diet from Genes and Shape of Tree Squirrels

Tropical forests of Central and South America represent hotspots of biological diversity. Tree squirrels of the tribe Sciurini are an excellent model system for the study of tropical biodiversity as these squirrels disperse exceptional distances, and after colonizing the tropics of the Central and South America, they have diversified rapidly. Here, we compare signals from DNA sequences with morpho

Tracking contemporary microbial evolution in a changing ocean

Ocean microbes are fundamental for the functioning of the Earth system. Yet, our understanding of how they are reacting to global change in terms of evolution is limited. Microbes typically grow in large populations and reproduce quickly, which may allow them to rapidly adapt to environmental stressors compared to larger organisms. However, genetic evidence of contemporary evolution in wild microb

Atmospheric observations consistent with reported decline in the UK's methane emissions (2013-2020)

Atmospheric measurements can be used as a tool to evaluate national greenhouse gas inventories through inverse modelling. Using 8 years of continuous methane (CH4) concentration data, this work assesses the United Kingdom's (UK) CH4 emissions over the period 2013-2020. Using two different inversion methods, we find mean emissions of 2.10±0.09 and 2.12±0.26Tgyr-1 between 2013 and 2020, an overall t

Concentrations of glutamate and N-acetylaspartate detected by magnetic resonance spectroscopy in the rat hippocampus correlate with hippocampal-dependent spatial memory performance

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) has been employed to investigate brain metabolite concentrations in vivo, and they vary during neuronal activation, across brain activity states, or upon disease with neurological impact. Whether resting brain metabolites correlate with functioning in behavioral tasks remains to be demonstrated in any of the widely used rodent models. This study tested the hyp

A registry-based study on universal screening for defective mismatch repair in colorectal cancer in Denmark highlights disparities in screening uptake and counselling referrals

Universal screening for defective mismatch repair (dMMR) in colorectal cancer utilizes immunohistochemical staining for MLH1, MSH2, MSH6 and PSM2. Additionally, BRAF V600E mutations status and MLH1 hypermethylation should be performed to distinguish germline and somatic dMMR alterations. A decade of Danish population-based registries has been analysed regarding screening uptake, detection rate and

Socio-Ecological Horizons In Consumer Research: : Sustainable Visions, Sentiocentrism Shifts and challenging Fantasies of Ethical Consumption

In this special session we wish to critique and reimagine the anthropocentric present. In contemporary consumerist society (Schmitt et al., 2022), the global “free market” is presented as the solution to the environmental and climate urgency through pillars like unlimited growth, responsibilized consumers, and not least, the domination of Nature (e.g. Hornborg 2019). There are alternatives, but thIn this special session we wish to critique and reimagine the anthropocentric present. Over-reliance on land for carbon dioxide removal in net-zero climate pledges

Achieving net-zero climate targets requires some level of carbon dioxide removal. Current assessments focus on tonnes of CO2 removed, without specifying what form these removals will take. Here, we show that countries’ climate pledges require approximately 1 (0.9–1.1) billion ha of land for removals. For over 40% of this area, the pledges envisage the conversion of existing land uses to forests, w

p-Harmonic Functions on the Semi-Riemannian Lie Groups SU(n) and SU(p,q)

The goal of this thesis is to construct p-harmonic functions on the Lie groups U(n), SU(n), U(p,q) and SU(p,q) equipped with the semi-Riemannian metric g(Z,W) = Re trace ( Z W^t ). To do this we present a method which relies on the notion of eigenfunctions. We define these functions and find examples of them defined on the relevant groups. To our knowledge, these eigenfunctions have not been p

Airborne DNA reveals predictable spatial and seasonal dynamics of fungi

Fungi are among the most diverse and ecologically important kingdoms in life. However, the distributional ranges of fungi remain largely unknown as do the ecological mechanisms that shape their distributions1,2. To provide an integrated view of the spatial and seasonal dynamics of fungi, we implemented a globally distributed standardized aerial sampling of fungal spores3. The vast majority of oper

A machine-learning approach clarifies interactions between contaminants of emerging concern

Humans and biotas are exposed to a cocktail of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), but mixture regulation is lagging behind. This is largely attributed to inadequate experimental data of mixture risk; revealing intricate interactions among CECs in mixtures with random combinations remains a formidable challenge. Here, we propose a new framework comprised of 5,720 lab tests of mixture risk for

Reimagining the Capitalocentric Present : Unpacking Fantasies of Ethical Consumption: Introducing new Consumer Ethics, and Establishing Sustainable Visions

In this conceptual paper we reimagine the Capitalocentric present. To do so, we (1) critique corporate fantasies about ethical consumption; (2) offer alternative relational ethics of consumption, with special attention to concrete neo-animist practices to imagine alternative futures to the Capitalocentric present, and (3) invite imaginative theorization as a bridge between present and future. In this conceptual paper we reimagine the Capitalocentric present. An experimental and theoretical investigation into the use of H2 for the simultaneous removal of ArO+ and ArOH+ isobaric interferences during Fe isotope ratio analysis with collision cell based Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Hydrogen in a hexapole collision cell is used with varying success in multi-collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry to reduce the plasma derived interferences 40Ar16O+ and 40Ar16OH+ that are isobaric with 56Fe+ and 57Fe+ respectively. The reactions of ArO+ and ArOH+ with H2 in the hexapole of a multi-collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer were studied practically and
