Folkliga band i parti och minut

In this article the concept of trade or retail bindings with regard to the Swedish book market during the 18th and early 19th century is introduced and discussed. Binding techniques and materials as well as the cost of different kinds of Swedish trade bindings are shown. Special attention is given to the large production of almanacs, hymnbooks and ABC books destined for the peasantry. Complaints a

Chromosomal integration and expression of green fluorescent protein in Zymomonas mobilis

An integrative vector was constructed to allow expression of heterologous proteins into the adhB locus of Zymomonas mobilis. As a reporter gene, the ORF of a bright variant of green fluorescent protein from Aequorea victoria (GFPuv) was fused to the adhB strong promoter from Z. mobilis by using a two-step PCR strategy. Z. mobilis recombinant strains that were stably marked by precise gene replacem

Infection-induced kinin B-1 receptors in human pulmonary fibroblasts: Role of intact pathogens and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase-dependent signaling

Kinin B-1 receptors (B1R) are involved in many pathophysiological processes, and its expression is up-regulated in inflammatory pulmonary disease. Although bacteria can generate kinin peptides, the molecular signaling mechanisms regulating B1R during infection by intact pathogens is unknown. The serious opportunistic clinical isolate Burkholderia cenocepacia (B. cen.) belongs to the important B. c

Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori vacA and cagA genotypes in Ethiopian dyspeptic patients

A total of 300 gastric biopsy samples and 50 Helicobacter pylori isolates were collected from Ethiopian adult dyspeptic patients. The vacA and cagA genes were detected in 90 and 79% of biopsy specimens, respectively, and in 100 and 87% of clinical isolates, respectively. Both genes were detected in 84% of the gastric biopsy samples and in 87% of the clinical isolates. Among vacA genotypes, the s1/

Principal component analysis in ECG signal processing

This paper reviews the current status of principal component analysis in the area of ECG signal processing. The fundamentals of PCA are briefly described and the relationship between PCA and Karhunen-Loeve transform is explained. Aspects on PCA related to data with temporal and spatial correlations are considered as adaptive estimation of principal components is. Several ECG applications are revie

Endogenous activators of the pain receptor TRPV1 From cell to man

Anandamid och andra NAE bildaN-acylethanolamines (NAEs) belong to a growing family of endogenous signalling molecules acting on a variety of receptors and ion channels. In 1992, it was reported that the N-acylethanolamine anandamide is present in the brain and activates the central cannabinoid (CB) receptor. Anandamide and other NAEs are considered to be generated on demand following receptor activation or cell stress. The ti

Mutations in the polyglutamine binding protein 1 gene cause X-linked mental retardation

We found mutations in the gene PQBP1 in 5 of 29 families with nonsyndromic (MRX) and syndromic (MRXS) forms of X-linked mental retardation (XLMR). Clinical features in affected males include mental retardation, microcephaly, short stature, spastic paraplegia and midline defects. PQBP1 has previously been implicated in the pathogenesis of polyglutamine expansion diseases. Our findings link this gen

InAs WRAP-gate nanowire transistors

InAs nanowire wrap-gate transistors have been fabricated in a vertical geometry using matrices of 11×11 nanowires. The fabrication process is based on conventional and scalable technologies that are adopted for the nanowire transistors. A SiNx layer is used as gate dielectric and a wrap-gate of 80 nm gate length is formed. These transistors show good DC characteristics with drive currents above 1

Mode-hop-free electro-optically tuned diode laser

A tunable external-cavity Littrow diode laser, with an intracavity electro-optical crystal, which combines a large mode-hop-free tuning range with high tuning speeds and high tuning accuracy, has been designed. A mode-hop-free single-mode tuning range of 50 GHz at 793 nm with an output power of 60 mW and tuning speeds of 1.5 GHz/mus is demonstrated. The instantaneous linewidth is smaller than 300

Degradation of antiproteinases, complement and fibronectin in chronic leg ulcers

It has been proposed that excessive and uncontrolled proteolytic activity is an important pathogenetic factor for chronic wounds. Identification of molecules that either control or reflect proteolysis in wounds may prove to be useful in determining wound healing activity. In this study wound fluid was sampled under a polyurethane dressing or on hydrophilic glass filters. Multiple chronic wound flu

Bulk moduli and high-pressure crystal structures of minium, Pb3O4, determined by X-ray powder diffraction

We report the pressure dependence of the crystal structure of lead tetroxide (P less than or equal to 41.05 GPa, T 298 K) using high-resolution angle-dispersive X-ray powder diffraction. Pb3O4 shows two reversible phase transitions in the measured pressure range. The crystal structures of the modifications identified have in common frameworks of Pb+4O6 octahedra and irregular Pb+2O4+1 respectively

Effects of leukocyte and fibroblast interferon on events in the fibroblast cell cycle

Serum-depleted human foetal skin fibroblasts were stimulated by addition of 10% foetal calf serum to proliferate synchronously for at least one cell cycle. This proliferation was suppressed by leukocyte or fibroblast interferon (IF), which prolonged the G1 phase and diminished the rate of DNA synthesis during the S phase in a dose-dependent manner. When used in identical concentration, as judged i
